Biotechnology in San Diego

The Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) is holding its annual convention here on June 19 to 22 at the San Diego Convention Center. It is the biggest biotech event in the world,with some 15,000 to 16,000 expected to attend, with 1,800 exhibitors. This will be one of the ten largest conventions in San Diego this year.

San Diego is the third largest biotech region in the country and more than 30 local companies will be presenting at BIO.

These San Diego companies and research institutions are leading in areas of biotechnology that include digital healthcare and advances toward approved drugs in treating Alzheimer’s Disease.

The program will highlight the top life science, biotech and medical advances occurring here in our city, plus relate it to the bigger picture of biotech contributions to daily life (food safety, wellness, nutrition, better health, etc.). It will also highlight the economic impact biotech has in San Diego and also the quality of the workers it is attracting.

Guest speakers:

Steve Mento, President and CEO of Conatus, and Chairman of the San Diego Steering Committee for BIO2017, will highlight the BIO Convention and its $40 million local economic impact.

Sara Radcliffe, President of California Life Science Association (CLSA), will discuss how San Diego fits in the bigger picture of the biotechnology industry.

Kathleen Lynch of Illumina, will give a case history to show the spectacular growth of San Diego as the “genomic center of the universe” and what it means for the future of personalized medicine.
