SUMMARY:Rose Schindler - Surviving the Holocaust & Returning to Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:Seventy years ago\, Rose Schindler was a teenage prisoner of the Third Reich\, caught up in the horror the world would come to know as the Holocaust.  She lost her parents and some of her siblings  who were among 1.1 million others who perished in Auschwitz.  Earlier this year\, Rose and her husband Max\, also a Holocaust survivor\, returned to Auschwitz along with 300 other survivors from around the world for a ceremony marking the day 70 years ago that they were liberated from the death camps. \nRose will share her emotional story of survival. Though it is difficult for her to talk about the past\, she does so as a promise she made to her father.   “Every story is special\,” she states\, “but I want to share my story\, just as I promised my father\, so the world will always remember and those who are gone will never be forgotten.”

SUMMARY:San Diego Youth Symphony
DESCRIPTION:SDYS and Rotary District 5340 International Youth Exchange celebrate the 11th annual International Youth Symphony in Balboa Park. Every summer\, this unique three week orchestral program brings together gifted conservatory musicians from around the world to play with exceptional SDYS musicians under the leadership of SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons for an intensive and top quality orchestral and chamber music experience. This year fifteen international musicians representing the UK\, Ireland\, Germany\, Spain\, The Czech Republic and Canada will join eighteen SDYS students to create the unique International Youth Symphony orchestra for two weeks of rehearsals and a variety of recitals and concerts will be shared with the community. \nThe orchestra will perform excerpts from some of the most celebrated works including Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro\, Gabriel Faure’s Pavane\, Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 in D Major “Haffner”\, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major.

DESCRIPTION:Why Rotary? \nWhy should someone join Rotary or continue to be a Rotarian? For years\, we have been explaining “What is Rotary?” when the real question is “Why Rotary?” Rotary International Director Brad Howard will explore what makes Rotary unique and how Rotary is positioned to be relevant in today’s social environment. He will ask you the question– Is Rotary a service organization that has members\, or is it a membership organization that does service? \nBrad Howard is a member of the Rotary Club of Oakland-Sunrise and Past District Governor of District 5170\, which covers the Silicon Valley.  He currently serves as Zones 25 & 26 Rotary International Director for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Rotary years.  Those Zones include parts of British Columbia and Nevada\, and all of Washington\, Oregon\, California\, Arizona and Hawaii\, representing more than 1\,300 Rotary clubs and approximately 60\,000 Rotarians.
