SUMMARY:Alison Holland & Clint Lusardi - Zoo Express Program
DESCRIPTION:Zoo Express: Bringing Joy and Comfort to Those Who Cannot Visit the World-Famous San Diego Zoo \nZoo Express is a program which was started in 1995. It was started as a way to reach out to children and seniors who might not otherwise be able to experience the wonderful world of animals.  Zoo Express is funded by generous donations and the program’s focus is on children’s hospitals\, disabled children and senior homes.  The trainers showcase 2 to 6 animals and show an interactive presentation allowing tactile with some of the animal ambassadors while giving information about them\, along with a wildlife conservation message. \nAlison Holland has been working at the Zoo for 39 years. She initially served as a keeper in the Children’s Zoo and Nursery\, but the majority of her time has been as a trainer in the Wegeforth Bowl. In 2012\, Alison was made coordinator for the Zoo express program. \nClint Lusardi is an animal care supervisor in the Animal Connections division of San Diego Zoo Global. He oversees the Children’s Zoo\, Free Flight Bird Show\, and the Zoo Express program. SUMMARY:Dr. Russell Low - The Chinese and Building of the Transcontinental Railroad: A Descendant's Story
DESCRIPTION:From Dr. Low:  “The building of the TCRR was a feat of unimaginable magnitude that required a Herculean effort. Its completion on May 10\, 1869 was celebrated across our nation. 1200 Chinese workers performed the most dangerous work.  With nothing more than hand tools\, they laid the CPRR through the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. The story of my great grandfather Hung Lai Wah and his 100 descendants is an American Story that spans 150 years and multiple generations.”

SUMMARY:Musical Prodigies -Guest speaker Dr. Gary McPherson\, Performance by Gavin George\, Piano Prodigy
DESCRIPTION:The Extraordinary World of the Musical Prodigy \nGuest speaker Gary McPherson\, Ph.D.\, Ormond Professor and Director of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in Australia\, studies giftedness: the characteristics and development of people who have an unusually high potential for greatness. His presentation will talk about his research on musical prodigies\, and the range of natural abilities and environmental factors that lead to extraordinarily rapid musical development. How can this be explained? How are musical prodigies different from other children? These two questions are at the heart of his presentation. \nDr. McPherson’s research has provided an increased and deepened understanding of how individuals develop wide-ranging musical skills. Investigating the cognitive and social process involved in acquiring and applying musical competencies\, and the personal and environmental factors that affect musical development\, ability and identity more generally\, he is widely accepted as having had very considerable impact on both music education theory and\, not least\, its everyday international practice. The value of this contribution is evidenced by widespread citations\, guest lecturing at over 50 universities in 25 different countries\, and over 40 keynote presentations at national and international conferences in various parts of the world. \nAlso appearing will be Gavin George\, piano prodigy. \nAcclaimed for his musical maturity and virtuosity with a passion for music\, 12 year-old pianist Gavin George began formal piano instruction at age three-and-a-half. He made his concerto debut by age seven with the Newark-Granville Symphony performing Haydn’s Concerto in D Major\, and was a featured performer on the CBS Early Show. As a gold medal winner for two consecutive years in the American Association for the Development of the Gifted and Talented International Piano Competition\, Gavin has performed multiple times in Carnegie Hall. He was awarded a full scholarship to study and perform at Luxembourg’s Vianden Music Festival. \nIn 2011\, Gavin became the youngest musician to perform on the Emmy-award winning show From the Top\, broadcast on NPR. He was awarded first prize in the SAA’s International Piano Concerto Competition performing Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3\, and performed at Orchestra Hall (Minneapolis)\, Midland Theater (Newark)\, and Constitution Hall (Washington\, D.C.). Gavin was selected for one as one of the documentary profiles made by PRODIGIES\, appearing on the YouTube THNKR series.

SUMMARY:Dr. Ramon Resa
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ramon Resa was born to a teen mother who had five children before she was twenty. He has never known his father. He was raised by his grandparents in a farm working family with fifteen children. Their lives depended on the crops they picked year round. When the crops failed\, they did without\, and many times went hungry. \nHis world was one of poverty\, neglect\, abuse\, and total disregard for education. His grandparents never encouraged him to get an education because to them\, farm work was as high as anyone could dream.  The odds stacked against him—low self-esteem\, a speech impediment\, recurring depression\, and prejudice—were overwhelming. \nIt was his second and fourth grade teachers who saw something in him and promoted his love of reading. They opened his eyes to the idea of going to college and becoming a doctor. When his grandparents urged him to give up his dream and get a factory job so he could pay them back for taking him in\, he almost caved in. But\, armed only with his stubborn belief in himself and the love and support of his college sweetheart Debbie\, now his wife of more than 30 years\, he persisted and finished medical school. He returned to the Central Valley and opened his pediatric practice\, where he has been working with poor and under served children.
