DESCRIPTION:Peter Seidler and Dan Shea studied homeless issues\, convened business and political leaders and raised funding\, bringing their ideas for a short-term solution to get homeless people off the streets to execution. Seidler is General Partner of the San Diego Padres and a founder and Managing Partner of Seidler Equity Partners\, a family-owned private equity fund.  Shea is a partner in Paradigm Investment Group\, which runs 140 restaurants across the U.S. He is also co-owner of Donovan’s Steak and Chop House restaurants. \nThey will address San Diego’s homelessness situation including the following topics: \n(a) What San Diego’s annual “point in time” homeless count tells us.\n(b) The importance of a fact-based\, analytical and collaborative culture among San Diego leaders (business\, political\, philanthropic\, service providers\, educational\, etc.)\n(c) The facts lead San Diego to Bridge Shelter Tents.  Focused collaboration made them a success.\n(d) Customizing the “Housing First” model for San Diego.\n(e) Puzzle pieces including mental health\, low cost supportive housing\, veteran’s needs\, the elderly\, etc.\n(f) Key next steps for all of us to support.

SUMMARY:SHARP Neonatal Research Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Miracle of Modern Neonatal Care \nSan Diego is one of the leaders in advancements made to ensure premature babies grow into healthy children. The work is no less than miraculous and being done right in our backyard. Hear from the leader in this research and the changes to birth centers and the neonatal intensive care units protocols that is saving lives. \nOur guest speaker will be Dr. Anup Katheria\, Director of the Neonatal Research Institute at Sharp. He will be presenting an overview of a recently developed program at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns\, the Neonatal Research Institute. This program\, the first of its kind\, had been developed to bring large scale research\, typically done at University Hospitals to the largest delivery hospital in the state. To date the institute has received 4 National Institute of Health grants\, and over $10 million in research funding. Over 1500 newborns have been enrolled in 30 trials all impacting the practice and care of the newborn.

DESCRIPTION:One Team\, Two Heroes \nThere are technologies available to help people with disabilities\, but none compare to a Canine Companions assistance dog\, transforming the art of healing through a cold nose and a warm heart. Learn how Canine Companions for Independence help people with physical disabilities\, as well as veterans with PTSD\, by providing service dogs\, at no cost to the recipient. We will also meet a veteran whose life has been made better by his Canine Companions service dog\, Hurley. \nPam Becker is Executive Director of the Southwest Region for Canine Companions for Independence\, a national non-profit organization headquartered in Santa Rosa\, California\, that breeds\, raises\, and trains expertly-trained assistance dogs at no cost to children\, adults\, and veterans with disabilities\, or professionals who work with clients who have special needs. The Southwest Region encompasses nine states and includes a training facility in Oceanside\, where 32 staff members provide dog training and care for 60-80 dogs; deliver program support for applicants and graduates who receive a Canine Companions dog; provide fundraising\, marketing and administrative support; and manage more than 850 volunteers who support the Canine Companions mission. \n

It brings musicians from across the globe together with SDYS’ most advanced musicians for a two-week intensive music experience. \nLast summer\, twenty-two international musicians joined twelve SDYS students to create a unique orchestra\, comprised of exceptionally talented student musicians led by SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons for two weeks of rehearsals and a variety of recitals and concerts in the community. \nThis will be the group’s fourth year performing for us. SUMMARY:Amnon Ben-Yehuda: A Story of Survival
DESCRIPTION:During the battle of Nebbi Yusha in the Upper Galilee on April 20\, 1948\, our own Amnon Ben-Yehuda\, a Palmach soldier and squad leader\, was shot in the head and rescued by his fellow soldiers to Ramot Naftali\, a mountaintop settlement about a mile away. He remained there for two days before being carried down the mountain\, ultimately to a hospital outside of Tel Aviv. Though this is but one story of bravery and comradeship in battle\, for Amnon\, it is a universal tale.

DESCRIPTION:For the second consecutive year\, Club 33 will be hosting the District 5340 finals\, where finalists from all across San Diego will compete for cash awards and the chance to go on to other regional Rotary contests. Watch these amazing high school students overcome their fear of public speaking to tell us about themselves and issues of concern to them\, all while showing us how their topic stacks up against the standard by which 1.2 million Rotarians act in everything they think\, say and do. SUMMARY:Vicente Fox\, Former President of Mexico
DESCRIPTION:In the year 2000\, Vicente Fox became the first President of Mexico elected from an opposition party since 1910. Fox began his career as a truck driver for Coca-Cola\, rose to become President of Coca-Cola Mexico\, and graduated from Harvard Business School. While often outspoken on controversial issues\, he’s always been a steadfast advocate for stronger U.S.-Mexico relations. President Fox’s local impact includes serving as a board member for the San Diego-based nonprofit Reality Changers. \nOn Friday\, April 13\, we were informed that President Fox will need to be in Mexico City on the 19th and therefore will be speaking to us remotely via Skype instead.  \nClub 33 members: If you will be bringing guests to this program\, click here to register them.  Thank you.

The technology would have given us an incredible advantage over the Warsaw Pact countries we opposed in Eastern Europe. \nWhen the theft of the ultra top secret technology by a deeply embedded KGB spy was discovered\, the FBI investigation and prosecution in Los Angeles Federal Court of the culprit impacted a young prosecutor’s life for almost 3 decades. That true story will be told by local attorney Robert Brewer. \n

SUMMARY:M.O.S.T.-Mercy Outreach Surgical Team
DESCRIPTION:We’ll get an overview of one of our longest-standing projects and its impact to thousands of young children in Mexico over the past few decades. This committee\, with volunteer anesthesiologists\, surgeons\, nurses\, operating room technicians\, pharmacists and many others\, corrects cleft lips\, cleft palates and other issues\, for children who have limited or no access to health care. M.O.S.T. provides care and compassion during week-long outreach missions in the heart of southern and central Mexico.  Each mission uplifts the spirits\, self-esteem and prospects of nearly 300 patients. (You’ll want to bring some tissues to this program. It’s always an emotional one.)

This life-changing experience is one of our signature service projects and a staple of San Diego Rotary since 1976. Come out to greet these fantastic students and show them your support! \nOur guest speaker will be Elvin Lai\, the CFO & Co Founder of Abnormal Company\, Inc. \nA business leader and entrepreneur\, Elvin Lai is CEO and president of Ocean Park Inn Hotel in Pacific Beach. He is also CFO and co-founder of HOTELbeat Inc.\, a web-based hotel efficiency optimization system focused on simplifying the most tedious tasks required to run a hotel. Finally\, Lai is CFO and co-founder of Abnormal Company Inc.\, a beer\, wine and food company that recently opened a new franchise in South Korea\, called Abnormal Taphouse and Cantina in Haeundae Beach\, Busan. Abnormal exports beer to three countries and continues to add on new importers. Lai is also an executive board member of the San Diego Hotel Motel Association and recently selected as one of San Diego’s 500 most Influential Business Leaders in San Diego. In 2014 he was named as Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year by the Asian Business Association (ABA) of San Diego. Lai is a graduate of the University of San Diego.
