SUMMARY:The First Folio - Barry Edelstein\, Artistic Director of Old Globe & Misty Jones\, Director Central Library
DESCRIPTION:The Old Globe and the San Diego Public Library were selected last year to co-host the only stop in California for First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare\, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library\, a national traveling exhibition organized by the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington\, DC to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.  The First Folio is one of the most important and consequential books every published\, and the plays printed in it—the plays that are the lifeblood of The Old Globe—are cornerstones of our language\, our worldview\, and our very humanity. \nBarry Edelstein and Misty Jones will give Rotarians a preview of First Folio! and also talk about the Folio itself: what it is\, and why this chance to see it up close is so rare and special.  The treasured volume will be on display free-of-charge to the public at the San Diego Central Library @ Joan Λ Irwin Jacobs Common from June 4 through July 7\, 2016.

SUMMARY:Jeff Kightlinger\, GM\, Metropolitan Water District of Southern California
DESCRIPTION:Southern California’s Water: A History of Southern California Development and Challenges for the Future \nCalifornia is a nation state with an economy that would rank it in the top ten nations of the world if it were a stand-alone country.  The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California serves water to 19 million Southern Californians – that is half the state’s population and almost 60% of California’s economy.  The history of the Metropolitan Water District and Southern California’s water supply is really the story of the development of Southern California.  Without the development of our massive integrated water supply infrastructure\, the vibrant\, booming\, successful Southern California we know today would not exist.  Jeffrey Kightlinger will tell the story of how Metropolitan came to be\, the challenges of maintaining a reliable water supply in an arid region\, and how Metropolitan plans to meet the challenges of the future. \nJeffrey Kightlinger is General Manager and Chief Executive Officer for The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The Metropolitan Water District is the largest municipal water provider in the nation delivering an average of over 2 billion gallons of water a day to 19 million customers across Southern California.  Metropolitan serves one out of every two Californians in the six counties of Los Angeles\, Orange\, Riverside\, San Bernardino\, San Diego and Ventura. \nKightlinger was appointed general manager in February 2006. As General Manager\, he manages the District’s $1.8 billion annual budget and 1\,800 employees to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of high quality water every day throughout Southern California.  He reports to a board of 38 members representing 26 member agencies. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Chris Sichel - President and CEO\, Make-A-Wish San Diego
DESCRIPTION:The Power of a Wish:  Why Hope\, Strength and Joy matter in life’s greatest battles\nMake-A-Wish began humbly in 1980\, when a group of kind hearted police officers made a very sick boy a “cop for a day”. This act of kindness began with a small community who came together to make a difference for a child when he needed it most. From that community\, sprung a movement that now reaches across the nation and the globe that seeks to grant a wish to every child battling a life-threatening illness.  Chris Sichel will discuss the inspiring ways that a wish can truly change a child\, a family and a community.  Medicine can heal a child’s body\, but a life-affirming wish can heal their spirit.

SUMMARY:California Innocence Project
DESCRIPTION:The Causes of Wrongful Conviction \nGuest speaker: Justin Brooks\, Director and Co-Founder of the California Innocence Project \nHundreds of innocent people have been released from prison in the United States over the past two decades.  By examining the cases\, we have learned that common causes of wrongful conviction are false confessions\, bad identifications\, police and prosecutor misconduct\, informant testimony\, and poor defense work. Professor Justin Brooks\, who has worked in the trenches exonerating clients as the Director of the California Innocence Project\, will talk about some of his project’s exonerations and the causes that led to the tragic result of an innocent person serving time in prison for a crime he/she did not commit. \nThe California Innocence Project (CIP) is a law school clinical program dedicated to releasing wrongfully convicted inmates and providing an outstanding educational experience to the students enrolled in the clinic. \nFounded in 1999\, CIP reviews more than 2\,000 claims of innocence from California inmates each year. Students who participate in the year-long clinic work alongside CIP staff attorneys on cases where there is strong evidence of factual innocence. Together\, they have secured the release of many innocent people who otherwise may have spent the rest of their lives in prison. \nClinic students assist in investigation and litigation by locating and re-interviewing witnesses\, examining new evidence\, filing motions\, securing experts\, and providing support to attorneys during evidentiary hearings and trials. CIP has trained more than 200 students who have gone on to become highly successful criminal defense attorneys\, criminal prosecutors\, Assistant Attorneys General\, and civil attorneys; all of whom\, after their experience in CIP\, believe in a fair and honest justice system and realize there is always room for improvement in the law. \n

SUMMARY:Jack Ford
DESCRIPTION:What was it like to live in the White House? \nEven though Jack Ford grew up in Washington DC and had been around politics all his life\, he never imagined one day he’d be living in the White House; but that’s what happened and it happened fast. One day Jack is working as a back-country Ranger in Yellowstone Park and the next he’s sitting in the East Room as his father\, Gerald Ford\, is being sworn in as the 38th President. From there it only gets crazier: intense media scrutiny for his controversial comments\, meetings with world leaders\, and socializing with the likes of George Harrison\, Andy Warhol\, Bianca Jagger and Chris Evert. \nPlease contact the office no later than Monday\, February 29 if you are bringing a guest to this program.

SUMMARY:Rady Children's First Pediatric Heart Transplant

SUMMARY:Gary McCord
DESCRIPTION:Gary McCord\, famous sports analyst for CBS Sports’ golf telecasts\, will talk about his life on the PGA Tour as a player and as a CBS golf television commentator. \n“Life is full of ups and downs\, good and bad\, but it wouldn’t be fun any other way.” Living his life by this optimistic philosophy\, Gary McCord persisted through years of mediocrity before finding great success in many aspects of the world of golf. An outstanding player\, announcer\, instructor\, author\, speaker\, and even actor\, Gary McCord has become a golf celebrity. \nGary is well known for enduring 23 years and 422 tournaments on the PGA Tour without nabbing a single victory. A man of good humor\, he boasted a “NO WINS” license plate for years to poke fun at his own less-than-glamorous career as a professional golfer. \nHe joined CBS Sports in 1986\, and he quickly became known for his outspoken (and sometimes controversial) golf commentary. \nGary is the author of the best-seller “Golf for Dummies” and his autobiography “Just a Range Ball in a Box of Titleists.” He also appeared as himself in the Kevin Costner movie Tin Cup.

SUMMARY:Salute to the Military program - Guest speaker Captain Derek Herrera
DESCRIPTION:On November 21\, 2014\, Captain Derek Herrera medically retired from Active Duty in the US Marine Corps after 8.5 years of service as an Infantry and Special Operations Officer. After graduating from the US Naval Academy in 2006\, he has spent his first six years in the Marine Corps building and leading teams of Marines\, Sailors and Soldiers in locations including Iraq\, Haiti\, the Middle East and Afghanistan. On June 14\, 2012\, Derek was shot and paralyzed from the chest down while leading his Marine Special Operations Team on patrol in the Helmand River Valley\, Afghanistan. \nDerek never had any desire to be a motivational speaker\, but has always tried to live in a way that would honor the men and women who have sacrificed to help him get to where he is today.\nAlthough his story is inspirational\, he spends less time telling his story and more on living his life in an honorable way. Derek has begun to share some of the lessons he has learned with the hope that others can benefit from his experience. \nCaptain Herrera recently graduated from the UCLA Anderson School of Management where he earned a Master’s in Business Administration. While at UCLA\, Derek was awarded the John Wooden Global Leadership Fellowship. Recently\, he founded Spinal Singularity\, a company that designs medical devices to improve the quality of life for people with Paralysis and Spinal Cord Injury and Disease (SCI/D). \nResilient Leadership\nDerek Herrera has overcome significant odds to rebuild his life and move forward. Over the past three years\, Derek has been able to achieve incredible feats physically\, spiritually\, and entrepreneurially. After sustaining a complete paralysis at the T5 level (chest) he returned to work in 6 months\, completed his first triathlon in 9 months\, took his first steps in an exoskeleton in 10 months\, and entered business school just 13 months after his injury. He has attained significant accolades since his injury and credits each and every award he has received to his wife\, his family\, his community\, and the memory of those that no longer have the opportunities he does on a daily basis (the men and women who were killed in action). \nIn addition to the external support Derek has utilized to achieve his goals\, he believes his resilience has been solidified by the mindset he has adopted and the mental approach he was able to forge during his recovery. Derek will briefly share some of the insights he has gained about the essential elements of resilience and how meaningful and impactful it can be for anyone in their daily lives.

SUMMARY:Women Peacemakers
DESCRIPTION:This September\, the University of San Diego welcomed the 2015 Women PeaceMakers. Beginning their two-month residency at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice\, these four peacemakers were chosen from more than one hundred applicants. \nThe Women PeaceMakers Program\, which began in 2003\, is an annual campus initiative aimed at bringing together women leaders from around the world with the goal of documenting the stories and best practices of international women leaders involved in human rights and peacebuilding practices. The women are paired with professional journalists who work to record their stories of survival and attempts at finding avenues for peace amidst violence and conflict. \n“The impact of having four women peacemakers is measured by the many ways they are able to transform us with their courage and unique voices. Each woman peacemaker joins USD to share narratives of kindness\, wisdom and action to change situations of terrible violence and oppression\,” said Patricia Marquez\, dean of the Kroc School of Peace Studies. Adding\, “Their presence and their voices humble and empower us to join in efforts leading to peace and justice.” \nThe 2015 Women PeaceMakers come from Afghanistan\, Namibia\, Israel\, and South Africa and work in a variety of peace-oriented fields. \nJudge Najla Ayoubi is originally from Afghanistan. Forced out of her profession during the Taliban rule when women were forbidden to work and girls older than eight were denied education. Ayoubi returned to Afghanistan in 2001 after the fall of the Taliban. Becoming active in the country’s recovery efforts\, Ayoubi has held positions in the State Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in Afghanistan\, the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan\, and the Joint Electoral Management Body. She is also an outspoken proponent of women’s rights and education. \nPauline Dempers comes to USD from Namibia. As a human rights activist and co-founder of Breaking the Wall of Silence (BWS)\, Dempers advocates for those affected by imprisonment\, torture and forced disappearances during Namibia’s war of independence. As a member of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) liberation movement\, Dempers fled to Angola in 1983 but was later arrested\, along with hundreds of other recruits\, and held and tortured in underground dungeons. Separated from her family during the war\, Dempers has made it her mission to fight for peace\, justice and freedom. \nGalia Golan is from Israel\, but is known internationally as an expert on Israeli-Palestinian politics. Golan is a grassroots activist focused on women’s roles in peacebuilding and parliamentary activism as well as a member of the Peace Now movement. Golan is also the founder of the Jerusalem Link (Bat Shalom) and the International Women’s Commission for a Just and Sustainable Palestinian-Israeli Peace. \nGlenda Wildschut of South Africa is a human rights activist and peacebuilder who grew up amidst violence and human rights abuses. Harassed and arrested by police\, Wildschut was determined to overcome the oppression she experienced. Becoming a registered nurse\, midwife\, and psychiatric nurse\, Wildschut has collaborated with health care workers on the establishment of trauma centers. A recipient of the Health and Human Rights Award\, Wildschut was appointed by Nelson Mandela as commissioner on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
