SUMMARY:UCSD Coordinated Robotics: from ideation\, to prototype\, to IP\, to market
DESCRIPTION:Professor Thomas R. Bewley\, UCSD Flow Control & Coordinated Robotics Labs\, will discuss how robotics is being radically transformed by modern cellphone electronics and software\, 3D design tools\, 3D printing\, custom printed circuit board fabrication\, and crowdfunding. We will explore how situational awareness and feedback control can help small\, simple vehicles overcome large\, complex obstacles\, and how new algorithms for coordinating squads of agile robotic vehicles can help protect human life\, grow food\, and better respond to environmental hazards like fires\, contaminant plumes\, and hurricanes. \nProfessor Bewley currently works at the intersection of semi-autonomous agile robotics and the analysis\, estimation\, and forecasting of environmental flows using advanced control theory and numerical methods. His Coordinated Robotics Lab is developing an array of clever vehicles to achieve maximum agility with minimal complexity\, and is coming to market with a number of small toy and educational robotic vehicles in collaboration with WowWee Robotics. His Flow Control Lab is developing new algorithms for weather-forecasting class problems like state estimation and adaptive observation in environmental contaminant plumes\, and in-situ monitoring of developing hurricanes using buoyancy-controlled balloons. In short\, Prof Bewley’s team is exploring how situational awareness and feedback control can help small\, simple vehicles overcome large\, complex obstacles\, and how new algorithms for coordinating squads of agile robotic vehicles can help grow food\, protect human life\, and better respond to environmental hazards.

SUMMARY:Dr. Mimi Guarneri - The Heart Speaks
DESCRIPTION:In her book “The Heart Speaks” Dr. Guarneri takes the reader on a journey of the heart – exploring the emotional heart\, able to be crushed by loss; the intelligent heart\, with a nervous system all its own; and the spiritual heart\, which yearns for a higher purpose. She skillfully weaves the science and drama of the heart’s unfolding. With groundbreaking new research and unparalleled experience\, Dr. Guarneri reveals the heart as a multi-layered\, complex organ and explores the new science that indicates the heart acts as a powerhouse of its own\, possessing intelligence\, memory\, and decision-making abilities that are separate from the mind. Her book includes a poignant collection of stories from heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine approaches. \nThe Heart Speaks and her clinical work have been featured on NBC Today and PBS’s To the Contrary and Full Focus. Her work was also featured in a two-part PBS documentary\, The New Medicine.

SUMMARY:Steve Fisher - SDSU Basketball Head Coach
DESCRIPTION:Steve Fisher is beginning his 16th season as head coach of San Diego State University.  No head-coaching career\, at any level\, started quicker than that of Fisher. Six games into his head-coaching career with Michigan\, he was undefeated and sporting a national championship ring. Fisher’s eight-plus seasons at Michigan produced a 184-82 (.692) record\, nine postseason tournament berths and three trips to the NCAA championship game\, including the magical run to the 1989 national title.\nHis accomplishments may be even greater at San Diego State. In 2001-02 he led the Aztecs to the postseason for the first time since 1985 and for just the fourth time ever. The 21 wins were second most for the school as a Division I program and the most since 1985. Those numbers came after just three seasons with the program.  He followed that up with a third consecutive season with a .500 or better record in 2002-03 and led SDSU back to the postseason for the second consecutive season for only the second time in the school’s Division I history. In addition\, SDSU claimed its first Division I postseason victory with a win in the NIT.\nIn 2006-07\, he led SDSU to the MW regular season and tournament crowns and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a Division I then-school-record 24 wins. In the 2013-2014 season\, the Aztecs matched their best-ever finish in the NCAA tournament despite being picked to finish in fourth place in the MW preseason poll and not receiving a single vote in either major preseason top-25 rankings. En route to its league-leading eighth conference championship\, San Diego State tied the school record with 20 consecutive victories before winning the second-most games in school history (31). SDSU completed the 2013-14 campaign with a 31-5 record\, won the Mountain West regular-season crown and appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16.  Fisher has also taken the Aztecs to the NIT four times\, including their run to the national semifinals in 2009. San Diego State has currently been to the postseason eight straight years.\nOnly 13 coaches have taken more teams to the Final Four\, including just five that are still active. He is one of three coaches to take three squads to the Final Four in the first five years of a head-coaching career\, and one of just six coaches to lead a team to a NIT title as well as the NCAA.\nFisher\, the 14th head coach in Aztec history\, is married to the former Angie Wilson\, another former teacher at Rich East High School. They have two sons. Mark is a Michigan graduate who is in his fourth year as an assistant coach and ninth season overall at SDSU. Jay is a 2008 graduate from the University of Southern California. \nCoach Fisher was named the 2014-15 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.  It is a small\, exclusive club of the biggest names in college basketball\, and the opening ante is generally a national championship.

SUMMARY:The Lost Boys - Walter Lam
DESCRIPTION:Walter Lam\, himself a refugee from Uganda\, fled political persecution and came to San Diego in 1986. Upon arrival to the United States\, Walter recognized that there were not programs addressing the needs of African Refugees arriving in San Diego. In 1989\, he founded the Alliance for African Assistance with the purpose of helping fellow refugees from Africa. Over the past 25 years the Alliance has greatly expanded to serving thousands of refugees from all over the world. \nWalter’s program will be  on  “The Lost Boys”.  This is a compelling tale about the resettlement of the lost boys of Sudan\, a mixed group of adults and minors.  The amazing part of this story is the transformation of these kids\, who grow up to become leaders in the U. S. and in their native country of Sudan.  Among all the refugees that came to America during the last 25 years\, this group comprises the largest number of refugees who went back to help their home country. \nWalter has served on the California Refugee Health Advisory Board and the California State Advisory Committee for Refugees\, the California Refugee Forum. He was also a member of Mayor Dick Murphy’s African American Advisory board. He was a member of the city of San Diego International Affairs board\, he is a recipient of the United Way of San Diego Ben Polak Award of Excellence and has been highlighted as a prominent refugee by the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCD).  Walter is Currently on the Board of Directors for the Neighborhood House Association\, as well as a an active member of San Diego Rotary by being involved with the Peace\, Rotary Cares and Microcredit committees.
