SUMMARY:Grotarian Event - Whaley House
DESCRIPTION:Join the Grotarians for a spooky private tour of the world famous and historic Whaley House. We will receive a one of a kind behind the scenes tour while hearing tales of bizarre encounters with long-dead residents. Learn more about this historic landmark in San Diego and why the Whaley House has earned its reputation as America’s Most Haunted!  We will walk across the street afterwards to the Old Town Mexican Cafe for a great dinner. (drinks are on your own) \nWhen: October 17th\nTime: 6PM to 8PM\nCostumes Optional\n$25 per person. \nPlease register by Oct 12 – Click here to register \nInfo about Whaley House’s haunted folklore: \n“Few houses in San Diego are as historically important as the Whaley House. In addition to being the Whaley Family home\, it housed a granary\, the County Court House\, San Diego’s first commercial theater\, various businesses including Thomas Whaley’s own general store\, a ballroom\, a billiard hall\, school\, and polling place. Significant events\, such as the seizure of the court documents and records in 1871\, and the suicide of Violet Whaley in 1885 profoundly affected Thomas and Anna Whaley. These events\, as well as the hangings which occurred on the property before the house was constructed\, have suffused the Whaley House with an air of mystery and added to its reputation as something more than just California State Historic Landmark #65. \nAccording to the Travel Channel’s America’s Most Haunted\, the house is the number one most haunted house in the United States. The alleged hauntings at the Whaley House have been reported on numerous other television programs and been written up in countless publications and books since the house first opened as a museum in 1960. Although we cannot state positively that the Whaley House is really haunted\, the voluminous documentation of paranormal occurrences at the site makes a compelling case. But\, if there are ghosts at the Whaley House\, who are they and why are they here? \nLocated at 2476 San Diego Avenue in historic Old Town San Diego\, the Whaley House stands today as a classic example of mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival architecture. Formally dedicated as a historic house museum on May 25\, 1960 and open to the public ever since\, it is one of southern California’s most popular visitor destinations. Over 100\,000 people visit the Whaley House annually\, with guests traveling from across the globe to experience this world-renowned museum. It is owned by the County of San Diego and since September of 2000 Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) has managed and operated the property. SOHO\, a non-profit advocacy organization\, has lead the community as a powerful catalyst for historic preservation by raising awareness and appreciation of our region’s architectural and cultural heritage since 1969. “ \nhttp://whaleyhouse.org/

SUMMARY:Grotarian Event - Women's Museum of California
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS CLOSED – THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO SIGNED UP! \nPlease join the Grotarians as we tour the Women’s Museum of California located in Liberty Station.  The museum is one of only three stand-alone museums of women’s history in the country. It was founded in 1983 as the Women’s History Reclamation Project.  A docent will give us a tour of the permanent exhibits at the museum\, as well as the current exhibit entitled\, “March to Empowerment.”  This exhibit explains the journey towards the American woman’s enfranchisement\, spanning the late 19th century into the early 20th century.  This exhibit will encourage viewers to place themselves within the legacy of a fight against the gendering of civil rights. Each section of the exhibit will provide a story arc created from materials extracted from the generous Alice Park Collection within the Museum archives\, and will expound upon the struggle for fostering political discourse that validated women as public voices with a right to the vote.  After the tour\, we will enjoy adult beverages and heavy appetizers\, while we socialize with fellow Rotarians.  As highlighted in the news\, the Women’s movement is ongoing and strong today.  We invite all Rotarians\, men and women\, to join us for this event. \nMarch 13\, 2018\n5:30-7:30 p.m.\nWomen’s Museum of California\n2730 Historic Decatur Road\, Suite 103\nSan Diego\, CA 92106 \nCost: $20/person \nClick here to see who is coming

SUMMARY:Grotarian Holiday Party at the Timken Museum
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Grotarians as we celebrate the holidays at the Timken Museum of Art.  We will enjoy fine art\, scrumptious food and drinks\, and delightful company. \nThe Timken Museum of Art is considered one of the finest small museums in the world. Situated in an iconic\, Frank Hope-designed mid-century modern building located on the Plaza de Panama in Balboa Park\, the Museum is home to a permanent collection that features masterworks covering over 700 years of history\, including the only Rembrandt on public display in San Diego. Other featured artists include Jacques-Louis David\, Pieter Bruegel the Elder\, Petrus Christus and John Singleton Copley.  Ranging from 14th-century altarpieces through 18th-century portraits and landscapes to 19th-century still life paintings\, the collection is world-renown. \nIn December of each year\, the Timken presents its “Jewels of the Season” holiday ornament display.  Over 2\,000 ornaments have been painstakingly handcrafted by San Diegans Florence Hord and Elizabeth Schlappi over the course of 80 years\, drawing influence from the popular Faberge egg. The dazzling ornament installation is designed by San Diego State University graduate students and is fast becoming a San Diego holiday tradition. \nAlso on view in December at the Timken:  Monet’s Étretat: Destination & Motif\, featuring two major oil paintings by Claude Monet\, on loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, of the quaint fishing village and the surrounding majestic cliffs of Étretat: The Manneporte (Étretat) and The Manneporte near Étretat\, painted in 1883 and 1886\, respectively. SUMMARY:Second Annual "Rise Against Hunger" Event with the San Diego Padres
DESCRIPTION:After a very successful\, sold out\, first time event last year\, we are once again joining with the Padres Volunteer Team with the goal to pack 60\,000 meals (twice as many as last year\, which means room for more volunteers) in two hours on Saturday\, September 16 at Petco Park.  The meals will be distributed by “Rise Against Hunger”\, an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable\, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. \n \nRise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice\, soy\, vegetables\, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated\, engaged advocates for the world’s hungry. The events also give volunteers hands-on experience in leadership development\, team-building\, relationship-building\, creative problem-solving\, and goal-setting and achievement. \nSince the inception of the meal packaging program in December 2005\, these packaged meals have been used primarily to support school feeding programs in developing countries. Hunger is the common thread among the world’s most challenging issues. Targeting hunger — specifically by supporting school feeding programs — leverages support to other causes including poverty\, disease\, education\, and the welfare of women and children. \nRegistration (required!) is open to members and their families only (ages four and up.)  Space is limited to the first 100 people who register.  Rotaracts\, Interacts and non-Club members DO NOT register on line.  Please contact Mary@rotary33.org \nMore event details will be sent to registrants as we get closer to the event. We look forward to another successful event this year and having some fun with the Padres volunteers! \nClick here to register. \n  \n
