DESCRIPTION:Please join the Grotarians as we celebrate the holidays at the Timken Museum of Art.  We will enjoy fine art\, scrumptious food and drinks\, and delightful company. \nThe Timken Museum of Art is considered one of the finest small museums in the world. The dazzling ornament installation is designed by San Diego State University graduate students and is fast becoming a San Diego holiday tradition. \nAlso on view in December at the Timken:  Monet’s Étretat: Destination & Motif\, featuring two major oil paintings by Claude Monet\, on loan from The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, of the quaint fishing village and the surrounding majestic cliffs of Étretat: The Manneporte (Étretat) and The Manneporte near Étretat\, painted in 1883 and 1886\, respectively. Also on display: The Cliffs at Étretat (1890) by William Henry Lipppincott and Sunset\, Étretat (1892) by George Inness on loan from Terra Foundation of American Art. \nThis will be a magical evening full of good cheer and merriment.  We hope to see you there! \nREGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT WILL CLOSE AT MIDNIGHT ON TUESDAY\, NOV. 28. \nLocation: The Timken Museum of Art in Balboa Park \nTime: 5:30pm to 7:30pm \nCost: $40/person \nRotarians\, guests and spouses are welcome. \nClick here to register \nClick here to see view guests

SUMMARY:Second Annual "Rise Against Hunger" Event with the San Diego Padres
DESCRIPTION:After a very successful\, sold out\, first time event last year\, we are once again joining with the Padres Volunteer Team with the goal to pack 60\,000 meals (twice as many as last year\, which means room for more volunteers) in two hours on Saturday\, September 16 at Petco Park.  The meals will be distributed by “Rise Against Hunger”\, an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable\, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. \n \nRise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice\, soy\, vegetables\, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated\, engaged advocates for the world’s hungry. The events also give volunteers hands-on experience in leadership development\, team-building\, relationship-building\, creative problem-solving\, and goal-setting and achievement. \nSince the inception of the meal packaging program in December 2005\, these packaged meals have been used primarily to support school feeding programs in developing countries. Hunger is the common thread among the world’s most challenging issues. Targeting hunger — specifically by supporting school feeding programs — leverages support to other causes including poverty\, disease\, education\, and the welfare of women and children. \nRegistration (required!) is open to members and their families only (ages four and up.)  Space is limited to the first 100 people who register.  Rotaracts\, Interacts and non-Club members DO NOT register on line.  Please contact Mary@rotary33.org \nMore event details will be sent to registrants as we get closer to the event. We look forward to another successful event this year and having some fun with the Padres volunteers! \nClick here to register. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Grotarian Event - Connections Housing Tour
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday March 8\, 2017\n 5:30pm to 7:30pm\n Connections Housing\n 1250 6th Avenue\,\n San Diego\, CA 92101 \nJoin Grotarians\, Rotarians and Rotaracts at Connections Housing\, located at 1250 6th Avenue\, San Diego\, CA 92101. The building is the old World Trade Center\, previously the Harcourt Brace Building and originally the San Diego Club. The Ten Downing restaurant was once in the space where the swimming pool was located. What is Connections Housing? In 2008\, the San Diego City Council\, with the support of the Mayor\, the San Diego Housing Commission and CCDC initiated a vision for a one-stop homeless services center. In 2010\, a volunteer citizen’s panel\, along with the approval of the San Diego City Counsel\, selected PATH as the lead agency for the project. PATH San Diego’s Connections Housing is a partnership which brings a variety of agencies together under one roof to meet the many needs of the downtown homeless population. The Interim Housing program accommodates 150 people at one time\, and is designed to move people off the street quickly. Clients suing this short-term housing are encouraged to stay in the building throughout the day to access the three dozen plus services provided in the PATH Depot. \nWe will tour the facility and view the services which the facility provides. With the rise of homeless in San Diego this is a very current issue and something we should all be aware of. \nAfter the tour concludes(about an hour)\, we will move next door to the Union Bank Building\, 530 B Street\, Suite 300\, at the offices of Messner & Smith. We will have access to the outdoor 3rd floor terrace where catered barbeque sandwiches\, from the Barbeque Boss\, and liquid refreshments will be served. \nParking should be available on the street and automatic (credit card required) parking will be available in the Union Bank’s underground facility. \nCost per person is $15 for Rotarians and their guests\, and $8 for Rotaracts. (If you are a Rotaract registering for this event\, please register using the “discount pricing” and add a (R) at the end of your last name) \nClick here to register \nClick here to see who is coming

SUMMARY:Grotarian Event - WFW Industries and Workshops for Warriors
DESCRIPTION:The 501©(3) nonprofit Workshops for Warriors as well as the social enterprise company VetPowered\, formerly WFW Industries\, will be hosting a tour for Grotarians. Founder and CEO\, Hernán Luis y Prado\, fellow Rotarian and former 15-year combat Veteran will be giving the tour and talk about how he discovered that Veterans\, Wounded Warriors\, and Transitioning Service members help fill the gap in skilled labor in the advanced manufacturing industry. The facility is in Barrio Logan and will include food and drinks. The tour will be comprised of two parts: \nThe first portion of the tour we will see Workshops for Warriors. Workshops for Warriors is the nonprofit school that trains and certifies Veterans\, Wounded Warriors\, and Transitioning Service Members into advanced manufacturing careers. There are two programs at the school\, machining and welding\, so the tour will take us through their 18 welding booths as well as their machining classroom and lab\, comprised of CNC Mills and CNC Lathes. Don’t worry—if you don’t know why that’s important or what those machines are\, you will! The best part about the school is that it is free to all Veterans. Hernán will dive into how the nonprofit manages to keep that commitment while still graduating 40-50 students each semester with nationally recognized\, portable and stackable credentials. The school also teaches on $6 million worth of cutting-edge equipment\, all with no Federal\, State\, or municipal funding. \nThe second portion of the tour we will see VetPowered\, formerly known as WFW Industries. Here we will get to see some ongoing projects and get a better understanding of what a machine shop looks like and how it functions. This company is a major source of funding for the nonprofit school\, and both have big plans in the future. You’ll get to hear about how they work together and how both companies are positioning San Diego to be the re-birthplace of advanced manufacturing in America. \nAfter the tour of the facility Hernán will leave space open for questions\, appetizers\, and drinks. You will also watch a short\, 3-minute video that shows some of the students that have been through the programs and the impact the school has had on themselves and their families. You won’t want to miss it!\nLocation: 2970 Main Street\, San Diego\, CA 92113\nTime: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\nCost: $20 \nClick here to register \nClick here to see who is coming
