SUMMARY:SHARP Neonatal Research Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Miracle of Modern Neonatal Care \nSan Diego is one of the leaders in advancements made to ensure premature babies grow into healthy children. The work is no less than miraculous and being done right in our backyard. Hear from the leader in this research and the changes to birth centers and the neonatal intensive care units protocols that is saving lives. \nOur guest speaker will be Dr. Anup Katheria\, Director of the Neonatal Research Institute at Sharp. He will be presenting an overview of a recently developed program at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns\, the Neonatal Research Institute. This program\, the first of its kind\, had been developed to bring large scale research\, typically done at University Hospitals to the largest delivery hospital in the state. To date the institute has received 4 National Institute of Health grants\, and over $10 million in research funding. Over 1500 newborns have been enrolled in 30 trials all impacting the practice and care of the newborn.

DESCRIPTION:One Team\, Two Heroes \nThere are technologies available to help people with disabilities\, but none compare to a Canine Companions assistance dog\, transforming the art of healing through a cold nose and a warm heart. Learn how Canine Companions for Independence help people with physical disabilities\, as well as veterans with PTSD\, by providing service dogs\, at no cost to the recipient. We will also meet a veteran whose life has been made better by his Canine Companions service dog\, Hurley. \nPam Becker is Executive Director of the Southwest Region for Canine Companions for Independence\, a national non-profit organization headquartered in Santa Rosa\, California\, that breeds\, raises\, and trains expertly-trained assistance dogs at no cost to children\, adults\, and veterans with disabilities\, or professionals who work with clients who have special needs. The Southwest Region encompasses nine states and includes a training facility in Oceanside\, where 32 staff members provide dog training and care for 60-80 dogs; deliver program support for applicants and graduates who receive a Canine Companions dog; provide fundraising\, marketing and administrative support; and manage more than 850 volunteers who support the Canine Companions mission. \n

DESCRIPTION:Entering its 14th year\, the annual International Youth Symphony is a partnership program between the San Diego Youth Symphony and Rotary District 5340 International Youth Exchange. It brings musicians from across the globe together with SDYS’ most advanced musicians for a two-week intensive music experience. \nLast summer\, twenty-two international musicians joined twelve SDYS students to create a unique orchestra\, comprised of exceptionally talented student musicians led by SDYS Music Director Jeff Edmons for two weeks of rehearsals and a variety of recitals and concerts in the community. \nThis will be the group’s fourth year performing for us. We will tour AleSmith Brewing Company’s 106\,000 square foot brewing facility\, which is the second largest facility in San Diego County. This will be a guided tour of their world-class unforgettable brewery.  The tour is approximately 45 minutes and covers the entire brewing process from wort creation\, fermentation\, filtration\, carbonation\, bottling\, packaging\, and more. SUMMARY:Amnon Ben-Yehuda: A Story of Survival
DESCRIPTION:During the battle of Nebbi Yusha in the Upper Galilee on April 20\, 1948\, our own Amnon Ben-Yehuda\, a Palmach soldier and squad leader\, was shot in the head and rescued by his fellow soldiers to Ramot Naftali\, a mountaintop settlement about a mile away. He remained there for two days before being carried down the mountain\, ultimately to a hospital outside of Tel Aviv. Though this is but one story of bravery and comradeship in battle\, for Amnon\, it is a universal tale.

DESCRIPTION:For the first time\, Virtual Reality (VR) technology is being used to provide an unparalleled view of San Diego’s past that hasn’t been seen in more than 200 years. 3R’s Robotics\, a San Diego based high tech visualization and educational firm\, and the San Diego History Center have partnered to allow viewers to turn back the years and experience how San Diego’s Presidio looked in 1790. You’ll be given a “behind the scenes” look at the VR experience and be able to take your own “step back in time.”

DESCRIPTION:Rotarians At Work Day happens the last Saturday in April each year. Started in 2006 as a joint effort between two Rotary Districts (one in the United States and one in Mexico)\, Rotarians at Work Day continues to grow. Each year\, Clubs around the world identify a hands-on project that all members can participate in to help their local community. \nDon’t forget to take some pictures and email them in to the Rotary office.
