SUMMARY:Grotarian Event - Women's Museum of California
DESCRIPTION:REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS CLOSED – THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO SIGNED UP! \nPlease join the Grotarians as we tour the Women’s Museum of California located in Liberty Station.  The museum is one of only three stand-alone museums of women’s history in the country. It was founded in 1983 as the Women’s History Reclamation Project.  A docent will give us a tour of the permanent exhibits at the museum\, as well as the current exhibit entitled\, “March to Empowerment.”  This exhibit explains the journey towards the American woman’s enfranchisement\, spanning the late 19th century into the early 20th century.  This exhibit will encourage viewers to place themselves within the legacy of a fight against the gendering of civil rights. Each section of the exhibit will provide a story arc created from materials extracted from the generous Alice Park Collection within the Museum archives\, and will expound upon the struggle for fostering political discourse that validated women as public voices with a right to the vote.  After the tour\, we will enjoy adult beverages and heavy appetizers\, while we socialize with fellow Rotarians.  As highlighted in the news\, the Women’s movement is ongoing and strong today.  We invite all Rotarians\, men and women\, to join us for this event. \nMarch 13\, 2018\n5:30-7:30 p.m.\nWomen’s Museum of California\n2730 Historic Decatur Road\, Suite 103\nSan Diego\, CA 92106 \nCost: $20/person \nClick here to see who is coming

SUMMARY:The Clearity Foundation-Hope for Ovarian Cancer Patients
DESCRIPTION:Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women\, accounting for more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system. About half of the women who are diagnosed with ovarian cancer are 63 years or older. Learn how one San Diego organization is helping patients and their physicians make better-informed treatment decisions based on molecular profiling of tumors. \nWho They Are: HOPE\nPatients facing recurrent and refractory ovarian cancer deserve the chance to find the best treatment for their specific cancer. The Clearity Foundation was launched in 2008 to revolutionize ovarian cancer treatment. \nOur team is made up of scientists\, physicians\, and volunteers who are passionate about changing the paradigm for ovarian cancer treatment from a trial-and-error approach to one that individualizes therapy selection based on each patient’s unique tumor molecular profile. \nThe Clearity Foundation helps eligible women obtain and understand the molecular profile of their tumor. Our profiling approach synthesizes data from multiple sources that measure the levels of specific protein biomarkers and detects certain genetic changes that are relevant in ovarian cancer. The resulting Tumor Blueprint provides information that enables physicians to select drugs that match each patient’s individual disease and may therefore be more effective than other options. \nWhat They Do: The Clearity Foundation is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization providing patient support services including lab test coordination\, Tumor Blueprint compilation\, interpretation\, and clinical trial identification free of charge. We believe that all patients\, regardless of means\, should have access to the most state-of-the-art care. \nClearity works with three commercial clinical laboratories to conduct tumor profiling and then synthesizes the results in order to provide personalized treatment options for ovarian cancer patients. The foundation has built an extensive clinical and molecular profiling database to interpret the tumor profiles and also enable research dedicated to advancing the treatment of ovarian cancer.

SUMMARY:Gary McCord and the Farmer's Insurance Open
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, this colorful professional golfer turned broadcast analyst returns for what will no doubt be a laugh-out-loud account of tournaments both past and present. He’ll give us an “eagle eye’s” view of this year’s match-ups and offer up some hilarious stories from is more than 45 years on the circuit. \nGary is well known for enduring 23 years and 422 tournaments on the PGA Tour without nabbing a single victory. A man of good humor\, he boasted a “NO WINS” license plate for years to poke fun at his own less-than-glamorous career as a professional golfer. \nHe joined CBS Sports in 1986\, and he quickly became known for his outspoken (and sometimes controversial) golf commentary. \nGary is the author of the best-seller “Golf for Dummies” and his autobiography “Just a Range Ball in a Box of Titleists.” He also appeared as himself in the Kevin Costner movie Tin Cup.

SUMMARY:Inside Camp David: The World of the Presidential Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Never before have the gates of Camp David been opened to the public. Former Camp David commander (and former San Diego Rotarian) Rear Admiral Michael Giorgione\, CEC\, USN (Ret.)\, takes us deep into this enigmatic and revered sanctuary as he reveals the intimate connection felt by the First Families with this historic retreat. \nMike will discuss the history of the 75-year old presidential retreat\, first commissioned by President Roosevelt.  Weaving stories from other camp commanders and drawing on his own experiences while in command\, serving President Bill Clinton and President George W. Bush\, Mike will highlight the challenges of raising a family in solitude inside the retreat\, the loneliness of command\, and his observations of presidents at work and play in the most exclusive retreat in the world. \n
