SUMMARY:3rd Annual Peace Awards
DESCRIPTION:Help us congratulate the awardees of San Diego Rotary’s Third Peace Awards. The presentation coincides with the United Nations’ annual day of global observance\, and our own Walter Lam will provide a poignant and very personal perspective on the power of peace. \nThe emphasis of the Award this year is on people assisting Refugees\, and no one understands their plight\, or how to help them\, better than Walter.  He founded the Alliance for African Assistance in 1989 and annually helps hundreds of refugees from a multitude of countries to resettle in San Diego.  You may think you know Walter; however\, you will learn so much more about his prestigious career by visiting this link:    http://www.alliance-for-africa.org/staff_bio.php?id=12 \nPlease plan to attend the Luncheon on September 21 (International Peace Day) as we present two Peace Awards…one to an organization and one to an individual\, and listen to Walter’s inspiring address.

SUMMARY:Second Annual "Rise Against Hunger" Event with the San Diego Padres
DESCRIPTION:After a very successful\, sold out\, first time event last year\, we are once again joining with the Padres Volunteer Team with the goal to pack 60\,000 meals (twice as many as last year\, which means room for more volunteers) in two hours on Saturday\, September 16 at Petco Park.  The meals will be distributed by “Rise Against Hunger”\, an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable\, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. \n \nRise Against Hunger’s meal packaging program is a volunteer-based initiative that coordinates the assembly-line packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice\, soy\, vegetables\, and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The program was created to give dedicated individuals and organizations — from businesses to civic clubs — the opportunity to participate in a hands-on international hunger relief program and to become educated\, engaged advocates for the world’s hungry. The events also give volunteers hands-on experience in leadership development\, team-building\, relationship-building\, creative problem-solving\, and goal-setting and achievement. \nSince the inception of the meal packaging program in December 2005\, these packaged meals have been used primarily to support school feeding programs in developing countries. Hunger is the common thread among the world’s most challenging issues. Targeting hunger — specifically by supporting school feeding programs — leverages support to other causes including poverty\, disease\, education\, and the welfare of women and children. \nRegistration (required!) is open to members and their families only (ages four and up.)  Space is limited to the first 100 people who register.  Rotaracts\, Interacts and non-Club members DO NOT register on line.  Please contact Mary@rotary33.org \nMore event details will be sent to registrants as we get closer to the event. We look forward to another successful event this year and having some fun with the Padres volunteers! \nClick here to register. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Women's Championship Golf Kicks Off In San Diego
DESCRIPTION:For only the third time in history\, the United States Golf Association will hold a championship in San Diego on August 7-13: The U.S. Women’s Amateur tour at the San Diego Country Club. Putting one on takes a great deal of effort. \nHear from our own Don Tartre and Tom Wilson\, this year’s Championship Director\, about what is going into holding such an event. And we will also hear from special guest\, Jill McGill\, the 1993 USGA Women’s Amateur Champion. We’ll tee it all off at our usual time! \nThe U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship marks the beginning of women’s competitive golf in this country. Along with the U.S. Amateur and the U.S. Open\, the Women’s Amateur was one of the USGA’s first three championships. \nThe first Women’s Amateur Championship was arranged on short notice one month after the 1895 Amateur and Open Championships. \nThe following small item appeared in the social column of a New York newspaper shortly after the completion of play: “Thirteen ladies played 18 holes of golf at the Meadow Brook Club\, in Hempstead\, recently. Mrs. Charles S. Brown\, whose husband plays at the Shinnecock Hills Club\, in Southampton\, L.I.\, made the best score and thus won the United States championship for lady golfers.” \nAlthough a stroke-play format was selected for the first championship\, the Women’s Amateur became a match-play competition in 1896\, and has remained so ever since. \nMany U.S. Women’s Amateur champions have gone on to success in professional golf\, including five-time champion JoAnne Gunderson Carner\, whose record of eight USGA titles is eclipsed only by Bob Jones and Tiger Woods (nine). Other notable champions include Beth Daniel\, Juli Inkster\, Danielle Kang\, Lydia Ko\, Kelli Kuehne\, Catherine Lacoste\, Anne Sander\, Pearl Sinn\, Louise Suggs\, Carol Semple Thompson and Bade Didrikson Zaharias.

SUMMARY:Steven Moore\, President\, Moore Worldwide
DESCRIPTION:Love him or hate him\, very few Americans expected Donald Trump to be elected President. Trump’s election comes in the wake of years of Congressional dysfunction. \nSteven Moore spent nearly a decade on Capitol Hill\, serving for 3 ½ years as chief of staff to a member of House leadership. He gives a compelling\, non-partisan\, data-driven presentation explaining the drivers behind Trump’s election\, the logjam that is Congress and the role of the media in both. \nMoore Worldwide is a political strategy\, public opinion research and lobbying firm with experience in more than a dozen US states and eight countries worldwide. \nSteven Moore spent nearly eight years as a senior aide on Capitol Hill\, including 3 1/2 years as a leadership aide. With extensive relationships in Washington and broad experience in political strategy\, Moore brings an array of tools to bear on public policy problems. \nMoore is known for devising data-driven solutions to political problems. During his time on Capitol Hill\, Moore helped redesign constituent communications for House Republicans\, incorporating data mining techniques to improve efficiency of communication. In 2011\, Campaigns & Elections Magazine awarded Moore the “CampaignTech Innovator of the Year” award for his efforts. By helping design the systems for constituent communications\, Moore has unique insights into the most effective grassroots tactics for influencing Congress.
