SUMMARY:Steven Moore\, President\, Moore Worldwide
DESCRIPTION:Love him or hate him\, very few Americans expected Donald Trump to be elected President. Trump’s election comes in the wake of years of Congressional dysfunction. \nSteven Moore spent nearly a decade on Capitol Hill\, serving for 3 ½ years as chief of staff to a member of House leadership. He gives a compelling\, non-partisan\, data-driven presentation explaining the drivers behind Trump’s election\, the logjam that is Congress and the role of the media in both. \nMoore Worldwide is a political strategy\, public opinion research and lobbying firm with experience in more than a dozen US states and eight countries worldwide. \nSteven Moore spent nearly eight years as a senior aide on Capitol Hill\, including 3 1/2 years as a leadership aide. With extensive relationships in Washington and broad experience in political strategy\, Moore brings an array of tools to bear on public policy problems. \nMoore is known for devising data-driven solutions to political problems. During his time on Capitol Hill\, Moore helped redesign constituent communications for House Republicans\, incorporating data mining techniques to improve efficiency of communication. In 2011\, Campaigns & Elections Magazine awarded Moore the “CampaignTech Innovator of the Year” award for his efforts. By helping design the systems for constituent communications\, Moore has unique insights into the most effective grassroots tactics for influencing Congress.

SUMMARY:Addressing Homelessness in San Diego: Past\, Present and Future

SUMMARY:Dr. Edith Eva Eger
DESCRIPTION:A native of Hungary\, Edith Eva Eger was just a young teenager in 1944 when she experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe\, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz\, the heinous death camp. Her parents lost their lives there. Toward the end of the war Edith and other prisoners had been moved to Austria. On May 4\, 1945 a young American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly amongst a number of dead bodies. He quickly summoned medical help and brought her back from the brink of death. \nAfter the war Edith moved to Czechoslovakia where she met the man she would marry. In 1949 they moved to the United States. In 1969 she received her degree in Psychology from the University of Texas\, El Paso. She then pursued her doctoral internship at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss\, Texas. \nDr. Eger is a prolific author and a member of several professional associations. She has a clinical practice in La Jolla\, California and holds a faculty appointment at the University of California\, San Diego. She has appeared on numerous television programs including Oprah Winfrey and was the primary subject of a holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch National Television. She is frequently invited to make speaking engagements throughout the United States\, Mexico\, and abroad. \nDr. Eger will share her story of victimization to empowerment. She will also share with us lessons that prove everybody is a survivor of something and that every experience has a gift for us that is for the greater good.

SUMMARY:Dr. Eli Berman- Empirical Studies of Conflict: Implications for ISIS and Syria
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eli Berman will summarize a decade of research on economics in conflict zones\, and draw lessons for confronting ISIS and stabilizing Iraq and Syria. Using evidence from Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and other conflicts\, Berman will explain why local allies must be induced by foreign powers to provide governance and enable economic development to stabilize Syria and reverse refugee flows. Framing development and security force assistance in that context implies practical policy reforms. \nDr. Berman is Chair and Professor of economics at UC San Diego. He is also Research Director for International Security Studies at UCSD’s Institute of Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC). \nIGCC addresses global challenges to peace and prosperity through academically rigorous\, policy-relevant research\, training\, and outreach on international security\, economic development\, and the environment. It brings scholars together across social science and lab science disciplines to work on topics such as regional security\, nuclear proliferation\, innovation and national security\, development and political violence\, emerging threats\, and climate change. \nHis book Radical\, Religious and Violent: The New Economics of Terrorism was published in 2009. Dr. Berman received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.

SUMMARY:Carl Guardino\, CEO-Silicon Valley Leadership Group
DESCRIPTION:“Lessons on Leadership – Silicon Valley and San Diego’s Innovation Economy” \nAnnually\, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group produces the “Silicon Valley Competitiveness Project\,” with 20 key indicators by which to contrast Silicon Valley with the other five top Tech Regions in the United States\, including Southern California (San Diego\, Orange and Los Angeles Counties)\, Austin\, Boston\, Seattle and New York City. What are the skills and traits each region needs to protect and grow its success? \nCarl Guardino\, one of Silicon Valley’s most distinguished business and community leaders\, is the President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group\, a public policy trade association that represents more than 400 of Silicon Valley’s most respected employers. \nIn February 2007\, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Guardino to a four-year term on the California Transportation Commission and has been reappointed twice by Governor Jerry Brown. In 2000\, the San Jose Mercury News named Guardino one of the “Five Most Powerful” people in Silicon Valley\, in a once-per-decade “Power Study.” He received similar recognition in 2010. \nKnown throughout the region as a consensus builder\, Guardino has championed a number of important issues\, especially in the areas of transportation and housing. Most recently\, Guardino led a 3-year effort that culminated in “Measure B” on the November\, 2016 ballot\, which will generate an additional $6.5 billion in local funds for traffic relief improvements. Measure B passed with 71.74% of the vote. As a housing advocate\, he co-created the Housing Trust Silicon Valley\, which has helped 20\,000 families afford homes in high-cost Silicon Valley by raising more than $90 million in voluntary contributions.

SUMMARY:2017 Camp Enterprise Kick Off-Guest speaker Stephan Aarstol
DESCRIPTION:This is our club’s 42nd year of bringing high school juniors to camp where they learn about the Free Enterprise System! \nThe camp provides an important learning environment for all to gain leadership skills and experience team building\, and students come away with a greater awareness of their possibilities. Join us as we send these students off to a life changing and transformative experience. \nOur keynote speaker this year will be Stephan Aarstol\, Founder and CEO of Tower Paddle Boards.\nHe is known as the guy who forgot his pitch on ABC reality show “Shark Tank” in its third season. \nBut the Tower Paddle Boards founder managed to recover and snag a $150\,000 investment from billionaire Mark Cuban\, in the episode that aired in March 2012. In exchange\, Cuban got 30 percent ownership in the business and its earnings.\nStephan Aarstol and his online manufacturer direct stand-up paddle-board company have since been recognized by both People and Entrepreneur magazines as one of the show’s top 10 success stories. \nStephan is an entrepreneurial thought leader and online marketing expert. With over 15 years of Internet experience\, he has worked with a large variety of startups\, from ecommerce and medical imaging to educational toys and youth backpacking. He founded Tower Paddle Boards in June of 2010 after picking up the sport early that year in the waves of La Jolla shores. Like anyone else whose tried the sport\, he’s been hooked ever since. \nStephan holds an MBA in New Venture Management from the University of San Diego and lives in San Diego today.
