SUMMARY:Elizabeth Brown - Cross Border Xpress
DESCRIPTION:Cross Border Xpress: A One of a Kind Landmark Project\nAfter decades of discussion\, years of negotiation and months of construction\, the Cross Border Xpress (CBX) is finally a reality and it is changing how people cross the US/Mexico Border. Learn about the journey to reality\, how the operation works and the opportunities it opens for the future. \nGuest Speaker Elizabeth Brown is the Chief Commercial Officer for the Cross Border Xpress. She is an airport specialist\, with over 20 years experience in business development\, human resources\, communications\, marketing and air service development. \nCross Border Xpress is an enclosed pedestrian bridge for Tijuana Airport (TIJ) passengers crossing the U.S./Mexico border. After more than seven years of planning\, design and permitting with government agencies from both sides of the border\, CBX opened for business in December 2015. \nSpanning 390 feet\, the CBX skywalk is the first ever to connect a facility in the U.S. directly into a foreign airport terminal. Cross Border Xpress serves the approximately 2.4 million passengers who already cross the border as part of their travels\, helping them avoid unpredictable\, often long delays at congested San Ysidro and Otay Mesa land ports of entry. \n

SUMMARY:Grotarian Event - WFW Industries and Workshops for Warriors
DESCRIPTION:The 501©(3) nonprofit Workshops for Warriors as well as the social enterprise company VetPowered\, formerly WFW Industries\, will be hosting a tour for Grotarians. Founder and CEO\, Hernán Luis y Prado\, fellow Rotarian and former 15-year combat Veteran will be giving the tour and talk about how he discovered that Veterans\, Wounded Warriors\, and Transitioning Service members help fill the gap in skilled labor in the advanced manufacturing industry. The facility is in Barrio Logan and will include food and drinks. The tour will be comprised of two parts: \nThe first portion of the tour we will see Workshops for Warriors. Workshops for Warriors is the nonprofit school that trains and certifies Veterans\, Wounded Warriors\, and Transitioning Service Members into advanced manufacturing careers. There are two programs at the school\, machining and welding\, so the tour will take us through their 18 welding booths as well as their machining classroom and lab\, comprised of CNC Mills and CNC Lathes. Don’t worry—if you don’t know why that’s important or what those machines are\, you will! The best part about the school is that it is free to all Veterans. Hernán will dive into how the nonprofit manages to keep that commitment while still graduating 40-50 students each semester with nationally recognized\, portable and stackable credentials. The school also teaches on $6 million worth of cutting-edge equipment\, all with no Federal\, State\, or municipal funding. \nThe second portion of the tour we will see VetPowered\, formerly known as WFW Industries. Here we will get to see some ongoing projects and get a better understanding of what a machine shop looks like and how it functions. This company is a major source of funding for the nonprofit school\, and both have big plans in the future. You’ll get to hear about how they work together and how both companies are positioning San Diego to be the re-birthplace of advanced manufacturing in America. \nAfter the tour of the facility Hernán will leave space open for questions\, appetizers\, and drinks. You will also watch a short\, 3-minute video that shows some of the students that have been through the programs and the impact the school has had on themselves and their families. You won’t want to miss it!\nLocation: 2970 Main Street\, San Diego\, CA 92113\nTime: 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.\nCost: $20 \nClick here to register \nClick here to see who is coming

DESCRIPTION:The 2016 Rio Olympics-Up close and personal from Tracy Sundlun and Meb Keflezighi \nIn this past summer’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro\, Tracy was the Head Manager of the U.S. Men’s Track & Field Team and Meb ran the Marathon. Tracy will share with us a few highlights of his experience at the Olympics\, and Meb will tell us about his race\, his 4th Olympic experience\, all in the context of his incredible unique life story. \nMeb is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon\, the Boston Marathon and an Olympic Medal—impressive feats for someone who had never run a mile until middle school. A graduate of the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA)\, his record also includes four NCAA championships\, 22 National Championships and a place on three United States Olympic teams. None of these achievements came easily: only his resilience\, determination and faith led Meb to prevail following some of life’s most challenging and heart-breaking circumstances.
