DESCRIPTION:“Lessons on Leadership – Silicon Valley and San Diego’s Innovation Economy” \nAnnually\, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group produces the “Silicon Valley Competitiveness Project\,” with 20 key indicators by which to contrast Silicon Valley with the other five top Tech Regions in the United States\, including Southern California (San Diego\, Orange and Los Angeles Counties)\, Austin\, Boston\, Seattle and New York City. What are the skills and traits each region needs to protect and grow its success? \nCarl Guardino\, one of Silicon Valley’s most distinguished business and community leaders\, is the President and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group\, a public policy trade association that represents more than 400 of Silicon Valley’s most respected employers. \nIn February 2007\, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Guardino to a four-year term on the California Transportation Commission and has been reappointed twice by Governor Jerry Brown. In 2000\, the San Jose Mercury News named Guardino one of the “Five Most Powerful” people in Silicon Valley\, in a once-per-decade “Power Study.” He received similar recognition in 2010. \nKnown throughout the region as a consensus builder\, Guardino has championed a number of important issues\, especially in the areas of transportation and housing. Most recently\, Guardino led a 3-year effort that culminated in “Measure B” on the November\, 2016 ballot\, which will generate an additional $6.5 billion in local funds for traffic relief improvements. Measure B passed with 71.74% of the vote. As a housing advocate\, he co-created the Housing Trust Silicon Valley\, which has helped 20\,000 families afford homes in high-cost Silicon Valley by raising more than $90 million in voluntary contributions.

Join us as we send these students off to a life changing and transformative experience. \nOur keynote speaker this year will be Stephan Aarstol\, Founder and CEO of Tower Paddle Boards.\nHe is known as the guy who forgot his pitch on ABC reality show “Shark Tank” in its third season. \nBut the Tower Paddle Boards founder managed to recover and snag a $150\,000 investment from billionaire Mark Cuban\, in the episode that aired in March 2012. In exchange\, Cuban got 30 percent ownership in the business and its earnings.\nStephan Aarstol and his online manufacturer direct stand-up paddle-board company have since been recognized by both People and Entrepreneur magazines as one of the show’s top 10 success stories. \nStephan is an entrepreneurial thought leader and online marketing expert. With over 15 years of Internet experience\, he has worked with a large variety of startups\, from ecommerce and medical imaging to educational toys and youth backpacking. He founded Tower Paddle Boards in June of 2010 after picking up the sport early that year in the waves of La Jolla shores. Like anyone else whose tried the sport\, he’s been hooked ever since. \nStephan holds an MBA in New Venture Management from the University of San Diego and lives in San Diego today.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday March 8\, 2017\n 5:30pm to 7:30pm\n Connections Housing\n 1250 6th Avenue\,\n San Diego\, CA 92101 \nJoin Grotarians\, Rotarians and Rotaracts at Connections Housing\, located at 1250 6th Avenue\, San Diego\, CA 92101. The building is the old World Trade Center\, previously the Harcourt Brace Building and originally the San Diego Club. The Ten Downing restaurant was once in the space where the swimming pool was located. What is Connections Housing? In 2008\, the San Diego City Council\, with the support of the Mayor\, the San Diego Housing Commission and CCDC initiated a vision for a one-stop homeless services center. In 2010\, a volunteer citizen’s panel\, along with the approval of the San Diego City Counsel\, selected PATH as the lead agency for the project. PATH San Diego’s Connections Housing is a partnership which brings a variety of agencies together under one roof to meet the many needs of the downtown homeless population. The Interim Housing program accommodates 150 people at one time\, and is designed to move people off the street quickly. Clients suing this short-term housing are encouraged to stay in the building throughout the day to access the three dozen plus services provided in the PATH Depot. \nWe will tour the facility and view the services which the facility provides. With the rise of homeless in San Diego this is a very current issue and something we should all be aware of. \nAfter the tour concludes(about an hour)\, we will move next door to the Union Bank Building\, 530 B Street\, Suite 300\, at the offices of Messner & Smith. We will have access to the outdoor 3rd floor terrace where catered barbeque sandwiches\, from the Barbeque Boss\, and liquid refreshments will be served. \nParking should be available on the street and automatic (credit card required) parking will be available in the Union Bank’s underground facility. \nCost per person is $15 for Rotarians and their guests\, and $8 for Rotaracts. DESCRIPTION:Promoting a regional “Blue Voice”\nThe Blue Economy is enormous\, growing\, and critical for the future of humans on earth…yet it is little understood\, studied and promoted. The Maritime Alliance (TMA) is the non-profit organizer of the largest ocean and water technology (BlueTech) cluster in the U.S. and one of the largest in the world. TMA is the Blue Voice of the San Diego region recognized nationally and internationally for its work. \n \nMichael Jones founded The Maritime Alliance (TMA) in 2007 after noticing that San Diego has a strong cluster of maritime technology companies. His background is finance and international relations\, having spent 8 years as a commercial lender and 31 years as an investment banker with his firm ProFinance Associates. He is a member of the Advisory Board of the College of Engineering at San Diego State University (SDSU)\, a member of the Board of Directors of the Maritime Museum of San Diego\, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Southern California Coastal Ocean Observing System (SCCOOS). He is also a Senior Fellow of the Foreign Policy Institute at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington\, D.C. to help SAIS focus on the Blue Economy. Michael speaks five languages and travels extensively.

DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Dr. Li-Rong Lilly Cheng \nDr. Li-Rong Lilly Cheng is a Professor in the School of Speech\, Language\, and Hearing Sciences and the Executive Director of Chinese Studies Institute at San Diego State University. She is the Managing Director of the Confucius Institute at SDSU. \nHer presentation will focus on the most important elements of understanding the differences between the east and the west. \nThomas Friedman says the winners in the 21st-century will be those with more PQ and CQ in order to leverage all the new digital tools to not just find a job\, but to invent one or reinvent one\, and not to just learn but to relearn\, for a lifetime. \nIn his book ‘The World is Flat’ he talked about how we must be globally competent. Global competence is defined as the ability to work across cultures with the understanding of cultural imperatives and mandates. Cultural imperative are driven by cultural values and world views. World views are deeply rooted in cultural and history of people. So an appreciation of such differences is part of the acquisition of global cultural competence.

DESCRIPTION:San Diego’s Scientific Future \nWith industry leading companies and world-class research institutions\, our region has a unique place in the world of science and technology. Work emanating from San Diego has and continues to change the world. But are we really doing all we can to grab the opportunity that our scientific past affords us? \nDr. Steven Snyder is the CEO for the Fleet Science Center in San Diego\, CA. Since taking on the role in 2013\, he has brought ambitious science experiences to San Diego\, like “ILLUSION\,” which made its North American premiere at the Fleet\, and “Taping Shape\,” opening in January 2016. He expanded the Fleet Inquiry Institute to teach the inquiry method of science learning to more than 1\,000 local educators a year. Most significantly\, Snyder redefined the Fleet’s role\, taking it from a science center in Balboa Park to a community organization dedicated to helping all San Diegans achieve their place in our shared scientific future. To that end\, he brought science into the community with unexpected programs like Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar\, which brings 50 scientists to 25 bars all over San Diego County every quarter. And he launched 52 Weeks of Science\, which leverages the wealth of local science and technology resources to bring science events directly to neighborhoods. He is a member of the ASTC Finance Committee\, a trustee of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership and a Steering Committee Member for the San Diego Festival of Science and Engineering. He is also a science advisor for the giant screen film Secrets of the Universe. \nDr. Snyder graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and took his Ph.D. in Physics in 1996 at Michigan State University in East Lansing\, Michigan.

Alaska has grown significantly over the years and is a Fortune 500 company. \nUnder the leadership of Tilden and his team\, Alaska is focusing on low fares\, profitable growth of the route network and becoming the easiest airline to fly. Alaska has earned recognition for ranking highest in customer satisfaction among traditional North American carriers by J.D. Power for nine consecutive years. The airline has also ranked No. 1 in on-time performance for six consecutive years by FlightStats.com\, and has received other honors for philanthropy\, community service and environmental stewardship. In addition to these achievements\, Alaska consistently ranks among the nation’s most profitable airlines. \nTilden is a 25-year veteran of Alaska Air Group. He has previously served as executive vice president of finance and planning\, chief financial officer\, and corporate controller. Before joining Alaska\, he spent eight years with the accounting firm Price Waterhouse. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Pacific Lutheran University and an executive master’s degree in business administration from the University of Washington. \nTilden was ranked #22 among the Top 50 Corporate Leaders in America by Fortune magazine in 2015. He has also been recognized by the Puget Sound Business Journal as Executive of the Year\, and by the Boy Scouts of America as a Distinguished Eagle Scout. \nTilden serves on the boards of the Washington Roundtable\, the Boy Scouts of America\, Pacific Lutheran University\, and Nordstorm. Additionally\, he chairs the board of the Seattle Chamber of Commerce. \nA Seattle native\, Tilden grew up a few miles from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport\, where he developed an early love of aviation. He holds a commercial pilot’s license and enjoys flying recreationally. He also enjoys cycling and spending time with his family.

DESCRIPTION:Guest speakers: Alan Nevin\, real estate economist and director of economic and market research for Xpera Group\,  and Dr. Alan Gin\, professor of economics at USD.  Both will give provide their expert predictions for the 2017 local and national economy. \nAlan Nevin has an extensive background in real estate economics\, lending and market analysis. He serves the development\, investment\, legal and public agency communities with residential and commercial real estate valuation\, feasibility and real estate advisory services and litigation support. \nIn the past\, Mr. Nevin served as Director of Real Estate Research for HomeFed Bank and was President of ConAm Securities\, a subsidiary of ConAm Management Company. Mr. Nevin also served as Chief Economist for the California Building Industry Association. He is the co-founder of firms that bought\, built\, rehabbed and operated more than three dozen residential and commercial projects in San Diego County\, valued in excess of $250 million. He was a founding member of three savings and loan associations. \nMr. Nevin taught for 30+ years at UCSD Extension. He is an instructor of a CLE-approved seminar on Litigation Economics and taught the capstone course on feasibility studies for the Master’s program at USD Burnham Moores Institute of Real Estate. \nIn 2016\, Mr. Nevin published his landmark book\, The Great Divide: The True Story of America Tomorrow\, detailing America’s demographic and economic trends\, and where it is leading the country for the next 25 years. \nAlan Gin is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of San Diego. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo\, and his Master’s of Arts and Ph.D. degrees\, both in Economics\, from the University of California at Santa Barbara. Professor Gin came to the University of San Diego in 1988\, after having previous taught at Loyola Marymount University and the University of California at Santa Barbara. His work experience includes stints with the Community Development Department of the County of Fresno and the Public Works Department of the City of Oxnard. \nProfessor Gin is one of the affiliated faculty members of the University of San Diego’s Burnham-Moores Center for Real Estate. His other research interests include local public finance\, urban transportation\, and the economy of San Diego. On the latter subject\, he is best known for developing and publishing the University of San Diego’s Index of Leading Economic Indicators for San Diego County\, a monthly report on the outlook for the local economy. Professor Gin’s insights on the local economy have made him a popular source for interviews\, and he has given over 1\,000 interviews to local and national media sources. He has been quoted in the San Diego Union-Tribune\, the Wall Street Journal\, the New York Times\, the Los Angeles Times\, the San Diego Daily Transcript\, the San Diego Business Journal\, Newsweek\, and other publications.

In this talk\, Jordan Evans will share how the “crazy” idea of the skycrane landing came to be and some of the many challenges associated with sending a robotic geologist\, like the Curiosity Rover\, to another planet. \nJordan Evans\, an SDSU Aerospace Engineering Alum\, manages the Mechanical Systems Division of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory\, responsible for leading over a thousand engineers and scientists in the development of advanced robotic systems for the exploration of our universe.
