SUMMARY:Dr. Jamie Gates - The Facts About Sex Trafficking in San Diego

Dr. Jamie Gates\, cultural anthropologist and director of Point Loma Nazarene University’s Center for Justice and Reconciliation\, presents research that show how the recruitment of victims is happening in schools and neighborhoods all over the county. Our young people are being groomed into a local commercial sex industry valued at over $800 million a year. He co-chairs the Research and Data Committee of the San Diego County Advisory Council on Human Trafficking and CSEC. He founded and directs the Human Trafficking Research and Data Advisory Roundtable (HT-RADAR) for SD County. SUMMARY:Dr. Octavio Aburto - Assistant Professor\, Marine Biology Research Division\, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
DESCRIPTION:Protecting Mexican Seas \nIn Mexico\, there is a tremendous opportunity to integrate a network of Marine Protected Areas. By taking advantage of the significant scientific knowledge and monetary investment to date\, the time is now to move forward with marine reserves implementation. Using Cabo Pulmo as a model for success\, it is known that it takes two key factors to implement MPAs throughout Mexico: community involvement to better protect marine ecosystems\, and communication efforts to inspire the public to protect the special places in Mexican seas. In this presentation\, you will see the work that Dr. Aburto has been doing leading scientific groups\, social-media campaigns\, and video and photography expeditions to protect mangrove forests\, coral and rocky reefs\, coastal lagoons and seamounts all along Mexico. \nDr. Aburto is the Director of the Gulf of California Marine Program and is an Assistant Professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) and a professional photographer associate with the International League of Conservation Photographers. Dr. Aburto obtained his PhD at the Center of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at SIO and was honored with the Jean Fort Award by the University of California\, San Diego for his significant contribution to an issue of public concern through his doctoral research. As a Kathryn Fuller and Hellman Fellow\, his research and photographs have focused on marine protected areas and commercially exploited marine species in Mexico\, Belize\, Costa Rica\, Ecuador and the U.S. His photographs have been part of several conservation projects worldwide and have won international photography contests including a gold place in the Our World Underwater 2016.

SUMMARY:Andrew Hewitt - Founder\, GameChangers 500
DESCRIPTION:Research has found that purpose-driven companies outperformed the S&P 500 by 14:1 over a 15 year study\, and with Millennials becoming increasingly focused on social causes\, organizations and leaders need to be aware of the trends. \nAndrew Hewitt will share his thoughts for becoming a for-benefit business\, so you can take advantage the #1 trend of our decade\, attract top talent\, deeply engage your employees\, tap into new sources of capital\, and turn your customers into raving fans; all rewards for doing a whole lot of good for this planet. The goal for San Diego is 1\,200 companies within 2 years. \nThrough his leadership in creating GameChangers 500\, a ranking of the world’s top for-benefit businesses\, Andrew Hewitt has become a sought-after expert on what differentiates high performing purpose-driven companies. His research has led him to be featured in major media such as BBC World News\, Forbes and Fast Company\, lecture at leading institutions such as the U.N. University for Peace and the Social Entrepreneurship World Forum\, and work with both innovative new companies like Zappos.com as well as century old corporations. \nAs a member of the Fourth Sector Mapping Initiative Advisory Council\, Andrew is supporting the U.S. government’s transition to a four sector economy where for-benefit corporate structures will join the traditional three sectors of for-profits\, non-profits\, and government organizations. When he’s not researching for-benefit companies he’s often supporting millennials in finding meaningful careers within this movement\, collaborating with student leadership networks and top schools such as Princeton and Harvard.

SUMMARY:San Diego History Center
DESCRIPTION:You think you know San Diego…but do you? \nOn July 21st\, the San Diego History Center presents the fun\, unusual and\, at times\, provocative how and why the San Diego region is what it is today. Its more than sun\, sand and suds\, but the successes (and missteps) of those who have made their mark on our region. From discovery of our area before Jamestown was discovered\, to how we could have been called “San Miguel”\, to the first passenger air service in the United States\, the quirky start to the San Diego Zoo and the changing face of the U.S. Mexico Border–the collections of the San Diego History Center will illustrate how these firsts came to be. The audience will get the opportunity to see up close and personal some of the objects that are part of the History Center’s collections. \nGuest speakers Bill Lawrence\, Executive Director\, Matt Schiff\, Marketing Director and Sarah Matteson\, Education Coordinator \n

SUMMARY:Dr. Ramon Resa
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ramon Resa was born to a teen mother who had five children before she was twenty. He has never known his father. He was raised by his grandparents in a farm working family with fifteen children. Their lives depended on the crops they picked year round. When the crops failed\, they did without\, and many times went hungry. \nHis world was one of poverty\, neglect\, abuse\, and total disregard for education. His grandparents never encouraged him to get an education because to them\, farm work was as high as anyone could dream.  The odds stacked against him—low self-esteem\, a speech impediment\, recurring depression\, and prejudice—were overwhelming. \nIt was his second and fourth grade teachers who saw something in him and promoted his love of reading. They opened his eyes to the idea of going to college and becoming a doctor. When his grandparents urged him to give up his dream and get a factory job so he could pay them back for taking him in\, he almost caved in. But\, armed only with his stubborn belief in himself and the love and support of his college sweetheart Debbie\, now his wife of more than 30 years\, he persisted and finished medical school. He returned to the Central Valley and opened his pediatric practice\, where he has been working with poor and under served children.

SUMMARY:Musical Prodigies -Guest speaker Dr. Gary McPherson\, Performance by Gavin George\, Piano Prodigy
DESCRIPTION:The Extraordinary World of the Musical Prodigy \nGuest speaker Gary McPherson\, Ph.D.\, Ormond Professor and Director of the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music in Australia\, studies giftedness: the characteristics and development of people who have an unusually high potential for greatness. His presentation will talk about his research on musical prodigies\, and the range of natural abilities and environmental factors that lead to extraordinarily rapid musical development. How can this be explained? How are musical prodigies different from other children? These two questions are at the heart of his presentation. \nDr. McPherson’s research has provided an increased and deepened understanding of how individuals develop wide-ranging musical skills. Investigating the cognitive and social process involved in acquiring and applying musical competencies\, and the personal and environmental factors that affect musical development\, ability and identity more generally\, he is widely accepted as having had very considerable impact on both music education theory and\, not least\, its everyday international practice. The value of this contribution is evidenced by widespread citations\, guest lecturing at over 50 universities in 25 different countries\, and over 40 keynote presentations at national and international conferences in various parts of the world. \nAlso appearing will be Gavin George\, piano prodigy. \nAcclaimed for his musical maturity and virtuosity with a passion for music\, 12 year-old pianist Gavin George began formal piano instruction at age three-and-a-half. He made his concerto debut by age seven with the Newark-Granville Symphony performing Haydn’s Concerto in D Major\, and was a featured performer on the CBS Early Show. As a gold medal winner for two consecutive years in the American Association for the Development of the Gifted and Talented International Piano Competition\, Gavin has performed multiple times in Carnegie Hall. He was awarded a full scholarship to study and perform at Luxembourg’s Vianden Music Festival. \nIn 2011\, Gavin became the youngest musician to perform on the Emmy-award winning show From the Top\, broadcast on NPR. He was awarded first prize in the SAA’s International Piano Concerto Competition performing Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3\, and performed at Orchestra Hall (Minneapolis)\, Midland Theater (Newark)\, and Constitution Hall (Washington\, D.C.). Gavin was selected for one as one of the documentary profiles made by PRODIGIES\, appearing on the YouTube THNKR series.

SUMMARY:Dr. Russell Low - The Chinese and Building of the Transcontinental Railroad: A Descendant's Story
DESCRIPTION:From Dr. Low:  “The building of the TCRR was a feat of unimaginable magnitude that required a Herculean effort. Its completion on May 10\, 1869 was celebrated across our nation. 1200 Chinese workers performed the most dangerous work.  With nothing more than hand tools\, they laid the CPRR through the high Sierra Nevada Mountains. The story of my great grandfather Hung Lai Wah and his 100 descendants is an American Story that spans 150 years and multiple generations.”
