SUMMARY:Grotarian Event at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, MARCH 26\, 2019 at 5:30PM\nAddress: Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla (Schaetzel Center\, Great Hall)\n9890 Genesee Avenue\, La Jolla 92037\nCost: $15 per person. \nPlease join us on Tuesday\, March 26\, 2019 at 5:30PM for an exclusive medical briefing and tour of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with its chief operations executive\, Cindy Steckel\, PhD\, RN\, and several of her esteemed colleagues. Together\, they will present on aspects of its almost 100-year history and showcase select areas of excellence\, including Scripps MD Anderson Cancer Center\, Prebys Cardiovascular Institute and Barbey Family Emergency and Trauma Center. Tours of “Prebys” and “Barbey” will immediately follow. \nSCRIPPS IS NO. 1 IN SAN DIEGO!\nEllen Browning Scripps—Scripps’ founding benefactress—fell and broke her hip in 1922\, requiring her to convalesce in La Jolla’s tiny sanitarium. Frustrated by the less than adequate facilities\, she gave money to establish Scripps Memorial Hospital at 464 Prospect Street in downtown La Jolla. In 1924\, the hospital opened with an operating room\, a nursery and 44 patient beds. While modest\, it provided La Jolla’s small seaside community with the latest and greatest in medical care and offered its talented medical staff opportunities to innovate in their respective specialties. Today\, Scripps is No. 1 in San Diego! \nA lovely Charcuterie board along with wine and beverages will be served.  Complimentary parking vouchers will be available to guests. \nClick here to register \n

SUMMARY:Annual Camp Enterprise Kickoff program

He is considered the “father of the (handheld) cell phone” and is also the first person in history to make a handheld cellular phone call in public. \nCooper is co-founder of numerous communications companies with his wife and business partner Arlene Harris. He is co-founder and current Chairman of Dyna LLC\, in Del Mar\, California. He sits on committees supporting the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the United States Department of Commerce.

SUMMARY:Chuck Samuelson-Founder & President\, Kitchens for Good
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Samuelson has spent a lifetime in the food service industry as a chef\, restaurateur\, and consultant. He started his career as a dishwasher at 13 and rose to Executive Chef and Restaurant General Manager in his late twenties. He has owned award-winning restaurants and catering companies and served as the Senior Manager for Food Services at Stone Brewing Company. While working as an Executive Chef at some of San Diego’s premiere restaurants\, Samuelson was shocked at the tremendous amount of food being wasted while many in the community lacked access to nutritious food. Samuelson leveraged his network and skills to build a social enterprise that is designed to break the cycles of food waste\, poverty and hunger in the community. \nKitchens for Good is a 501(c)(3) and social enterprise with the mission to break the cycles of food waste\, hunger\, and poverty through innovative solutions in workforce training\, healthy food production\, and social enterprise. Kitchens for Good bridges the gap between wasted food and hunger by rescuing surplus and cosmetically imperfect food from wholesalers and farmers and engaging students in a culinary apprenticeship program to transform these ingredients into nutritious meals for hungry families. This approach addresses the most immediate need of hunger by feeding the food lines\, but also helps to shorten the line itself by giving unemployed people the skills to become self-sufficient. Through the power of kitchens and cooking\, our students transform their lives from one of addiction\, incarceration\, homelessness\, and unemployment\, to lives of stability\, employment\, and a brighter future. \nThe talk will be about the ROI of Social Enterprise with Kitchens For Good as the model for how essential social good work can be more sustainable.  Kitchens For Good is a part of the new wave of “revenue first” nonprofits who seek to change communities through a more sustainable business model.  For every dollar donated to KFG\, they match that dollar with earned revenue. \n

SUMMARY:Rodney Scott\, Chief Patrol Agent\, San Diego Sector Border Patrol
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday Dec. 13\, 2017\, the San Diego Sector Border Patrol welcomed its newest Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott. \nChief Scott manages more than 2\,400 law enforcement agents and support staff and has direct oversight of the area’s eight Border Patrol stations. San Diego Sector’s area of responsibility includes 60 linear miles of international boundary with Mexico and the entire California coastal region. \nPrior to his new appointment\, he served as the CPA of the El Centro Sector\, as the Deputy Chief Patrol Agent at SDC\, and as the Patrol Agent in Charge at the Brown Field Station in SDC. He also has held a variety of leadership positions\, including Assistant Chief within CBP’s Office of Anti-Terrorism in Washington\, D.C.\, and as the Director/Division Chief for the Incident Management and Operations Coordination Division at CBP Headquarters. \nChief Scott will provide a “State of the U.S./Mexico border” specific to San Diego and provide context to the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis.  Are the Central American caravans a national security threat or a humanitarian issue?  There is already a fence along the border between San Diego and Tijuana\, do we really need a border wall?   He will provide his perspective on these questions and more.

This is always a wonderful evening at OLP.  The event includes dinner and adult beverages. \nThank you to Club 33 member and Head of School for OLP\, Lauren Lek\, for hosting us again this year! \nLocation:  Academy of Our Lady of Peace (“OLP”)\, 4860 Oregon Street\, San Diego\, CA 92116\nDate:     January 29\, 2019\nTime:  5:30-7:30 pm\nCost:  FREE\nThis event is for Grotarians only.  Please no spouses or guests. \nClick here to let us know that you will be attending
