SUMMARY:Virtual Online Meeting-Shelley Zimmerman
DESCRIPTION:“Public safety is a shared responsibility.” \n“It was an honor and privilege to be a San Diego police officer for thirty-five years\, retiring as the Chief of Police. As police officers we are held to a higher standard and we should be. I believe this is the most challenging time to be a police officer. I also believe with every challenge comes an opportunity for improvement. In my remarks\, I will comment on these topics; San Diego PD was an early adopter of body worn cameras – how has this technology evolved\, how has social media changed the landscape of policing\, and what is meant by “defunding the police”.”  Shelley Zimmerman \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Online Meeting-Assemblymember Shirley N. Weber\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:Assemblymember Shirley N. She was a faculty member and chair of the Department of Africana Studies at San Diego State University for over four decades. Deeply committed to education\, she served for eight years as school board member and president at San Diego City Schools. As an Assemblymember\, Weber has translated her commitment to education and social justice into her ambitious legislative agenda\, including bills on K-12 education reform\, civil rights\, public safety\, food insecurity\, protections for person with disabilities\, and voting rights. In August 2019\, Weber introduced and passed a historical piece of legislation\, AB 392\, known as the California Act to Save Lives\, which determines when police could use deadly force. This law sets the highest standards in the nation for California. It will be on November’s ballot to repeal the 1996 BAN on Affirmative Action. \nWeber will speak about police reform\, economic inequality and racism. \n

SUMMARY:Virtual Online Meeting - Heiwa: Rotary Hiroshima Survivor Trees - Planting for Peace
DESCRIPTION:Guest speaker: Steve Yoshida\, Rotarian and US Coordinator for Heiwa \nHeiwa (Japanese for “Peace”) \nRotary Hiroshima Survivor Trees (Heiwa) is a coalition of Rotary clubs in Japan and the US that distribute survivor seeds and plants from Hiroshima with the message of peace\, hope\, and survivability. Members include a Nobel Peace Prize recipient and a Hiroshima bomb survivors. \nHeiwa grew from the vision of its parent\, Green Legacy Hiroshima (GLH)\, working under its guidance. Now Heiwa harvests survivor seeds and grows plants in its own greenhouses in Hawaii and California to spread through Rotary clubs all over the world. \nThe seedlings are from trees that survived the nuclear attack that killed 140\,000 people and devastated the city of Hiroshima\, Japan\, on Aug. 8\, 1945. In the aftermath\, experts predicted the city’s soil would remain too toxic to give life to anything for the next 75 years. To their pleasant surprise\, after several months\, in the spring of 1946\, people started to see new buds springing out from the seemingly burnt trees. That gave them hope that they too could live\, and [the trees] became a symbol of hope and peace\, to tell people how horrible the bombing was\, to promote peace\, and help propagate and distribute survivor trees. \nHeiwa is organizing a Hiroshima Peace Conference in 2020 to celebrate peace on the 75th anniversary of the one and only use of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. \n

SUMMARY:Building Change and Peace: Standing in the Gap & Just and Moral Governance
DESCRIPTION:San Diego Rotary’s Peace Prize will be awarded during the October 1 meeting and this year’s award focuses on social justice in matters relating to race and equity. The annual peace award is designed to honor achievements that promote awareness and actions aligned with Rotary’s Mission Statement: to help build goodwill and peace in the world. \nThe Peace Committee has selected two organizations to be awarded for their significant contributions toward building peace in 2020: \nStanding in the Gap is a grassroots organization that brings together retired black law enforcement\, the SD County Association of Police Chiefs and Sheriffs and black community and religious leaders to address systematic racism and report on activities that promote peaceful engagement and meaningful change that support racial justice. Representing Standing in the Gap is Chula Vista Chief of Police Roxana Kennedy and Reverend Bryon Barmer\, Sr. \nAttorney and community advocate Genevieve Jones-Wright serves as the founding Executive Director of Community Advocates for Just and Moral Governance (MoGo)\, an impact litigation organization in San Diego County whose mission is to hold the government accountable to all people\, especially those who have been marginalized by society. MoGo’s sole purpose is to achieve racial and social justice. \nJoin us for this enlightening conversation with our awardees who will have an opportunity to share their work and how San Diego is finding ways to lead positive change during this pivotal year. It will be a program not to miss!

SUMMARY:Steph Johnson-Executive Director/Creative Director\, Voices of Our City Choir
DESCRIPTION:President Chris’ initiative for 2020-2021 is to build awareness and action around homelessness in San Diego. This makes the program on October 15 one he is excited to share with the club: Musician/Jazz vocalist Steph Johnson\, is the Executive and Creative Director and Co-Founder of Voices of Our City Choir\, the “Golden Buzzer” semi-finalists on America’s Got Talent Season 15. \nSteph and her team are changing lives of our unsheltered neighbors through music. She noticed the suffering and began outreach that brought food\, clothing\, blankets and friendship to people experiencing homelessness. Inspiration came from doing outreach and discovering that many people living on the streets were artists and musicians with no outlet\, and so began Voices of Our City Choir. Steph was named the 2020 Woman of the Year by San Diego Assemblymember Todd Gloria and is a gifted musician with a heart of gold. \nIn this illuminating program you will learn more about how Steph sees the challenges and lessons from those living on the streets\, as well as some success stories (over 60 people are now in reliable housing and rebuilding their lives with dignity and a sense of home again.) Plus\, you will glean what it was like to win the Golden Buzzer this spring and some behind the scenes stories from the AGT experience. \nDon’t miss this special program\, filled with hope and heart–it’ll change the way you look at homelessness.

SUMMARY:Bill Toone\, Founder- ECOLIFE Conservation/Monarch Butterflies
DESCRIPTION:Rotary Clubs all over the U.S. have begun a project to restore habitat for the beautiful\, but threatened Monarch butterflies (Operation Pollination). As you may know\, the butterflies have an extraordinary migration pattern. They fly from Mexico to Canada and back. No single butterfly can do it. It takes FOUR generations! Their population is declining because habitat and food sources are being destroyed. \nBill Toone\, a world-renowned conservation biologist and a spokesperson for endangered species\, will join us and give us a look into the world of the Monarch butterfly. We will learn about their extraordinary migration\, their lifecycle\, threats\, and programs helping their recovery. \nBill has worked around the globe\, experiencing the world’s natural wonders as well as its misunderstood cultures. From the foothills of California where he pioneered the early years of the California condor recovery program to the remote forests of Madagascar where Bill had his life forever changed\, he has collected unusual stories of wildlife and the people who depend on them. Bill specialized in rain forest transects and remote field conservation programs for the Zoological Society of San Diego. \nHe co-founded ECOLIFE Conservation in 2003. ECOLIFE approaches conservation holistically\, addressing the biggest threats to life on earth. They focus on providing simple solutions to the leading causes of wildlife extinctions and human deaths. \n
