SUMMARY:Rady Children's First Pediatric Heart Transplant
DESCRIPTION:Over the last 25 years\, all local children needing heart transplantation were referred to institutions outside of San Diego. This required families to temporarily move out of San Diego\, leading to disruption of lives and separation of the child from home\, friends and community for months to years. DESCRIPTION:Gary McCord\, famous sports analyst for CBS Sports’ golf telecasts\, will talk about his life on the PGA Tour as a player and as a CBS golf television commentator. \n“Life is full of ups and downs\, good and bad\, but it wouldn’t be fun any other way.” Living his life by this optimistic philosophy\, Gary McCord persisted through years of mediocrity before finding great success in many aspects of the world of golf. An outstanding player\, announcer\, instructor\, author\, speaker\, and even actor\, Gary McCord has become a golf celebrity. \nGary is well known for enduring 23 years and 422 tournaments on the PGA Tour without nabbing a single victory. A man of good humor\, he boasted a “NO WINS” license plate for years to poke fun at his own less-than-glamorous career as a professional golfer. \nHe joined CBS Sports in 1986\, and he quickly became known for his outspoken (and sometimes controversial) golf commentary. \nGary is the author of the best-seller “Golf for Dummies” and his autobiography “Just a Range Ball in a Box of Titleists.” He also appeared as himself in the Kevin Costner movie Tin Cup.

SUMMARY:Author and Biographer Lynne Carrier on Leon L. Williams
DESCRIPTION:Leon L. Williams was a pioneering political leader who wielded influence at a critical time in San Diego’s history.  The first African American city councilman and\, later\, the first black county supervisor\, Williams worked tirelessly for inclusive policies that would benefit all San Diegans.  He also had a clear vision for transforming San Diego.  His ideas and proposals helped rescue a dying inner city and brought a fixed-rail trolley to the San Diego State University campus. \nLynne Carrier will talk about Leon’s remarkable life and his effective approach to politics. \nLynne Carrier\, author of Leon’s book “Together We Can Do More”\, is a journalist who first covered Leon in the late 1970s when she was a City Hall reporter for the San Diego Evening Tribune.  Her articles also have appeared in numerous other newspapers and  magazines\, including Forbes and Newsweek.  She wrote a history of planning\, “San Diego: Looking to the Future\,” for the city of San Diego.

DESCRIPTION:Jazz Xpress is an All-Star youth jazz band directed by Stan Lawrence.  They are the longest running independent youth jazz group in San Diego.   Jazz Xpress has played at numerous concerts\, festivals\, swing dances\, parties\, events and Rotary functions.   Members are middle school\, high school and college age musicians.  Jazz Xpress plays contemporary compositions and arrangements by some of the best in the field!

As an engineer he developed Spacecraft Thermal Barrier Control Coatings used on satellites to conduct the waste heat away from the electronic black boxes.  He has had CEO experience\, and has served on the Board of Directors of numerous companies in various stages of development and operation.  Mr. Moore is the founder and Managing Partner of the MVP VC Funds™\, L.P. He was the Founder of First National Bank at San Diego. Mr. Burnham serves as Honorary Trustee of Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute. He also serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council of The Rady School of Management at the University California\, San Diego. Mr. Burnham is a former Director of San Diego Gas & Electric Company\, Cubic Corporation\, and Gen-Probe\, Inc. He is a former Trustee of Stanford University and President of America’s Cup Organizing Committee.

DESCRIPTION:The first round of the Rotary Golf Tournament for President Peter’s year was held on Friday\, October 8th at the San Diego Country Club. A packed field of 8 (yes\, your read that correctly) golfers enjoyed a wonderful day of camaraderie and fun. \nWith two rounds to go\, Tom Wilson\, our resident PGA professional\, shares the lead with Guy Maddox\, who both shot net 76s. The closest to the pin contest was won by John Anewalt who put his tee shot a mere 4’5” away from the cup from a distance of 137 yards! Alas\, John missed his birdie putt and had to settle for a ho-hum par. \nSAVE THE DATE – NOVEMBER 20! \nOur second round is scheduled for Friday\, November 20th and included on this day will be a special treat for Club 33 golfers who participate—an appearance by the SDSU Women’s Golf Team! Lucky Rotarians may get to play a round with individual members of the Lady Aztecs. Marten Barry’s money is on the SDSU women to out-score every Rotarian\, with the possible exception of our golf professional Tom.\nCost is $116 plus beverage/food cost.\nTee time is TBD. \nPlease contact Marten Barry mbarry@naisandiego.com or Alli Lucas alucas@naisandiego.com if you would like to play in this next round of our tournament. \n
