SUMMARY:Club 33 Golf Tournament - Second Round
DESCRIPTION:The first round of the Rotary Golf Tournament for President Peter’s year was held on Friday\, October 8th at the San Diego Country Club. A packed field of 8 (yes\, your read that correctly) golfers enjoyed a wonderful day of camaraderie and fun. \nWith two rounds to go\, Tom Wilson\, our resident PGA professional\, shares the lead with Guy Maddox\, who both shot net 76s. The closest to the pin contest was won by John Anewalt who put his tee shot a mere 4’5” away from the cup from a distance of 137 yards! Alas\, John missed his birdie putt and had to settle for a ho-hum par. \nSAVE THE DATE – NOVEMBER 20! \nOur second round is scheduled for Friday\, November 20th and included on this day will be a special treat for Club 33 golfers who participate—an appearance by the SDSU Women’s Golf Team! Lucky Rotarians may get to play a round with individual members of the Lady Aztecs. Marten Barry’s money is on the SDSU women to out-score every Rotarian\, with the possible exception of our golf professional Tom.\nCost is $116 plus beverage/food cost.\nTee time is TBD. \nPlease contact Marten Barry mbarry@naisandiego.com or Alli Lucas alucas@naisandiego.com if you would like to play in this next round of our tournament. \n

SUMMARY:Salute to the Military program - Guest speaker Captain Derek Herrera
DESCRIPTION:On November 21\, 2014\, Captain Derek Herrera medically retired from Active Duty in the US Marine Corps after 8.5 years of service as an Infantry and Special Operations Officer. After graduating from the US Naval Academy in 2006\, he has spent his first six years in the Marine Corps building and leading teams of Marines\, Sailors and Soldiers in locations including Iraq\, Haiti\, the Middle East and Afghanistan. On June 14\, 2012\, Derek was shot and paralyzed from the chest down while leading his Marine Special Operations Team on patrol in the Helmand River Valley\, Afghanistan. \nDerek never had any desire to be a motivational speaker\, but has always tried to live in a way that would honor the men and women who have sacrificed to help him get to where he is today.\nAlthough his story is inspirational\, he spends less time telling his story and more on living his life in an honorable way. Derek has begun to share some of the lessons he has learned with the hope that others can benefit from his experience. \nCaptain Herrera recently graduated from the UCLA Anderson School of Management where he earned a Master’s in Business Administration. While at UCLA\, Derek was awarded the John Wooden Global Leadership Fellowship. Recently\, he founded Spinal Singularity\, a company that designs medical devices to improve the quality of life for people with Paralysis and Spinal Cord Injury and Disease (SCI/D). \nResilient Leadership\nDerek Herrera has overcome significant odds to rebuild his life and move forward. Over the past three years\, Derek has been able to achieve incredible feats physically\, spiritually\, and entrepreneurially. After sustaining a complete paralysis at the T5 level (chest) he returned to work in 6 months\, completed his first triathlon in 9 months\, took his first steps in an exoskeleton in 10 months\, and entered business school just 13 months after his injury. He has attained significant accolades since his injury and credits each and every award he has received to his wife\, his family\, his community\, and the memory of those that no longer have the opportunities he does on a daily basis (the men and women who were killed in action). \nIn addition to the external support Derek has utilized to achieve his goals\, he believes his resilience has been solidified by the mindset he has adopted and the mental approach he was able to forge during his recovery. Derek will briefly share some of the insights he has gained about the essential elements of resilience and how meaningful and impactful it can be for anyone in their daily lives.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Grotarians for an informative evening at Junior Achievement’s Finance Park. Mission Fed JA Finance Park is a paperless\, high-tech learning center that helps students imagine who they want to be and gives them hands-on tools and skills to plan for a financially secure future. Since 1950\, Junior Achievement of San Diego County has provided life-changing programs to more than 730\,000 youth—in the classroom and after school—to foster an understanding of how the “real world” works. SUMMARY:Women Peacemakers
DESCRIPTION:This September\, the University of San Diego welcomed the 2015 Women PeaceMakers. Beginning their two-month residency at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice\, these four peacemakers were chosen from more than one hundred applicants. \nThe Women PeaceMakers Program\, which began in 2003\, is an annual campus initiative aimed at bringing together women leaders from around the world with the goal of documenting the stories and best practices of international women leaders involved in human rights and peacebuilding practices. The women are paired with professional journalists who work to record their stories of survival and attempts at finding avenues for peace amidst violence and conflict. \n“The impact of having four women peacemakers is measured by the many ways they are able to transform us with their courage and unique voices. Each woman peacemaker joins USD to share narratives of kindness\, wisdom and action to change situations of terrible violence and oppression\,” said Patricia Marquez\, dean of the Kroc School of Peace Studies. Adding\, “Their presence and their voices humble and empower us to join in efforts leading to peace and justice.” \nThe 2015 Women PeaceMakers come from Afghanistan\, Namibia\, Israel\, and South Africa and work in a variety of peace-oriented fields. \nJudge Najla Ayoubi is originally from Afghanistan. Forced out of her profession during the Taliban rule when women were forbidden to work and girls older than eight were denied education. Ayoubi returned to Afghanistan in 2001 after the fall of the Taliban. Becoming active in the country’s recovery efforts\, Ayoubi has held positions in the State Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in Afghanistan\, the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan\, and the Joint Electoral Management Body. She is also an outspoken proponent of women’s rights and education. \nPauline Dempers comes to USD from Namibia. As a human rights activist and co-founder of Breaking the Wall of Silence (BWS)\, Dempers advocates for those affected by imprisonment\, torture and forced disappearances during Namibia’s war of independence. As a member of the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) liberation movement\, Dempers fled to Angola in 1983 but was later arrested\, along with hundreds of other recruits\, and held and tortured in underground dungeons. Separated from her family during the war\, Dempers has made it her mission to fight for peace\, justice and freedom. \nGalia Golan is from Israel\, but is known internationally as an expert on Israeli-Palestinian politics. Golan is a grassroots activist focused on women’s roles in peacebuilding and parliamentary activism as well as a member of the Peace Now movement. Golan is also the founder of the Jerusalem Link (Bat Shalom) and the International Women’s Commission for a Just and Sustainable Palestinian-Israeli Peace. \nGlenda Wildschut of South Africa is a human rights activist and peacebuilder who grew up amidst violence and human rights abuses. Harassed and arrested by police\, Wildschut was determined to overcome the oppression she experienced. Becoming a registered nurse\, midwife\, and psychiatric nurse\, Wildschut has collaborated with health care workers on the establishment of trauma centers. A recipient of the Health and Human Rights Award\, Wildschut was appointed by Nelson Mandela as commissioner on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

SUMMARY:Robert DeLaurentis\, the "Zen Pilot"
DESCRIPTION:Flying Thru Life: Global Service on a Wing and a Prayer (and a Malibu Mirage) \nFlying around the world in a single piston plane on a record setting flight to 23 countries and five continents in 98 days in a plane called the “Spirit of San Diego” isn’t what you think of as the typical business classroom environment or service organization. But then applying spiritual concepts to a 22-year-old business and growing it 300% in 5 years isn’t typical either.\nJoin Robert DeLaurentis as he shares inspiring—and at times terrifying—adventures and insights from his recent circumnavigation of the earth. Whether in the air at 23\,000 feet and 230 miles per hour living in a neoprene survival suit or on the ground meeting people from all walks of life\, Robert’s discovery that we are all citizens of the world with a purpose and dream bigger than we know will forever change the way you look at life.\nRobert DeLaurentis\, “Zen Pilot” is a successful author\, real estate entrepreneur\, five-year instrument and commercially rated pilot with 1200 hours of flight time\, philanthropist\, and Navy Gulf War Veteran. He holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and an advanced graduate degree in Spiritual psychology. His book\, “Flying Thru Life\,” which answers the question of how to create the abundance of time and money in your life to pursue your dreams\, was just released and is an Amazon Top Seller.
