SUMMARY:2015 Mr./Ms./Mrs. San Diego Program
DESCRIPTION:Betty Peabody \nThe Past Presidents of San Diego Rotary have proudly selected Mrs. Betty Peabody as this year’s recipient of the\n2015 Mrs. San Diego Award. \nPlease join us on September 24th at the Liberty Station Conference Center to honor Betty for her leadership and contributions to the City of San Diego. \nBetty Peabody’s interests\, volunteerism\, and achievements in the San Diego community have been many and varied\, but all were due to her tireless passion for the betterment of our city. \nVolunteering for Balboa Park almost daily since 1969\, Betty co-founded the Friends of Balboa Park with the vision of keeping the park alive well into the next century.  They have implemented over 200 projects in 15 years\, funded by private donations of more than $4 million.  These range from the five information kiosks placed around the park\, to mapping the water pipe infrastructure with SDSU students and to returning the 5th grade San Diego Unified School program to the Park. Their latest project\, The Friends’ Water-Wise program\, was designed to optimize water use in the park to make the park more environmentally sustainable while keeping it healthy and attractive for visitors. \nBetty has served on the boards of the San Diego Museum of Man\, the Central Balboa Park Association\, and as president of the House of Hospitality and the Balboa Park Millennium Society. She conceived Christmas on the Prado which is now December Nights. \nA founding member of the San Diego County Crime Stoppers\, Inc.\, Betty has encouraged good people to report bad things anonymously for the past 31 years. Betty was recognized by their Lifetime Achievement Award and now Crime Stoppers gives the Betty Peabody Award annually to an individual or organization that has helped law enforcement or promoted public safety. \nTo honor legacies of her late husband\, Dr. Homer Peabody (also a Mr. San Diego Award recipient in 1997)\, she currently serves on the Rees-Stealy Research Foundation Board and the Youth Tennis San Diego (Barnes Center) Foundation Board.  Her social and philanthropic interests include The Thursday Club\, The Wednesday Club\, UCSD Town and Gown\, ARCS and San Diego Rotary Club.  She also sits on the board of the SDSU Friends of the Library and was a 2009 Mortar Board honoree. \nBetty has been recognized for her contributions to our community\, including most recently being the recipient of the San Diego Woman of the Year Award given by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins.  Atkins described Betty’s story as a “microcosm for the contributions that women make all over California and our great nation.” \nAlthough born and raised in Oregon\, Betty has adopted San Diego as her home.  She and Homer have four children\, five terrific grandchildren and seven-plus special great-grands.  Betty also enjoys theatre\, reading\, and unusual travel experiences.

SUMMARY:Gary Weitzman-President & CEO\, San Diego Humane Society & SPCA
DESCRIPTION:San Diego Humane Society: Inspiring Compassion Since 1880 \nSince 1880\, San Diego Humane Society has inspired compassion by helping people and animals. Originally founded to protect children and horses\, the organization has expanded to meet the needs of the region by rescuing animals in distress; saving companion pets\, farm animals and wildlife; and\, providing resources to keep pets with their families. The most recent accomplishment is maintaining zero euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals in San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition shelters. \nGary Weitzman\, DVM\, joined the San Diego Humane Society as their President and CEO in May 2012. He is a licensed veterinarian and an accomplished animal welfare professional with more than 25 years of experience. \nServing as a community advocate is very important to Dr. Weitzman and he is committed to collaborating with individuals\, rescue groups and organizations to identify innovative solutions to do more for animals and their people. \nA significant focus for Dr. Weitzman and the San Diego Humane Society is a new initiative called “Getting to Zero” – it involves a comprehensive plan to save the life of every healthy and treatable animal in San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition shelters.

SUMMARY:Dr. Steven Steinhubl\, Director of Digital Medicine\, Scripps Translational Science Institute
DESCRIPTION:Can Mobile Technology Completely Transform Healthcare? \nRemarkable advances in miniaturized computing power and connectivity over the last several decades have changed nearly every aspect of our lives\, but they have yet to make a substantial impact on healthcare.  However\, mobile health (mHealth) technologies currently being developed are capable of enabling unprecedented changes in the manner and quality of clinical care available to the growing majority of the world’s population with mobile connectivity. This presentation will review the great deal of ongoing work being carried out\, much in San Diego\, to establish the true capabilities and potential value of the evolving field of mHealth. \nDr. Steinhubl is the Director of Digital Medicine at STSI and a cardiologist at Scripps Health\, Scripps Clinic. He received his undergraduate training in chemical engineering at Purdue University in Indiana\, graduate training in physiology at Georgetown University in Washington\, DC\, and his medical degree at St. Louis University in Missouri. \nDr. Steinhubl’s research activities have covered a broad range of topics in cardiology with a primary early focus on trials of novel antithrombotic therapies for the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease\, and more recently on the application of an integrated systems-based approach to the optimal identification\, communication and treatment of an individual’s risk for various manifestations of cardiovascular disease. He has been principal investigator or helped lead over a dozen large-scale\, international randomized trials and has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts as well as numerous book chapters\, and abstracts.

SUMMARY:Dr. Peter Salk\, President - Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Jonas Salk’s Centenary Year – a Vision for the Future \nJonas Salk is an icon in the history of medicine.  The polio vaccine he and his research team developed in the early 1950s lifted a pervasive fear.  He is less well known for his earlier work on the first influenza vaccine\, his founding of the Salk Institute\, and his relentless pursuit of ways to alleviate human suffering in diverse realms.  This talk\, given by Dr. Peter Salk\, will touch on these various aspects of his life. \nDr. Peter Salk graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University in 1965 and Alpha Omega Alpha from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1969. Following two years of house staff training in internal medicine at the University Hospitals of Cleveland\, he worked in his father’s laboratory at the Salk Institute from 1972-1984 conducting research on the biology and immunotherapy of cancer and autoimmune disease and strategies for vaccine production. He worked again with his father from 1991-1995 on a project to develop an inactivated vaccine for HIV infection\, and subsequently worked on the introduction of AIDS treatment programs in Africa and Asia. He is currently President of the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation\, where he is devoting attention to educating the public regarding his father’s life and work and to extending and applying his father’s vision to help address humanity’s present challenges and opportunities\, particularly in the realms of vaccines\, global health\, and creating a sustainable human future.

SUMMARY:Rose Schindler - Surviving the Holocaust & Returning to Auschwitz
DESCRIPTION:Seventy years ago\, Rose Schindler was a teenage prisoner of the Third Reich\, caught up in the horror the world would come to know as the Holocaust.  She lost her parents and some of her siblings  who were among 1.1 million others who perished in Auschwitz.  Earlier this year\, Rose and her husband Max\, also a Holocaust survivor\, returned to Auschwitz along with 300 other survivors from around the world for a ceremony marking the day 70 years ago that they were liberated from the death camps. \nRose will share her emotional story of survival. Though it is difficult for her to talk about the past\, she does so as a promise she made to her father.   “Every story is special\,” she states\, “but I want to share my story\, just as I promised my father\, so the world will always remember and those who are gone will never be forgotten.”
