SUMMARY:Mothers Day Program- highlighting the foster system & adoptive parents
DESCRIPTION:Our upcoming Mother’s Day program promises to be unique and memorable.  Our guest speaker\, Teresa Stivers\, the Executive Director of Walden Family Services\, will inform us and inspire us with the stories of outstanding foster parents. We will also hear directly from the 2014 Foster Mom of the Year.   Many foster children come from families where a mother’s love comes at a premium.  The people in our community who step up and choose to fill the void with unconditional love and nurturing are rare and invaluable and we will celebrate their selfless dedication to our struggling youth. \nFor the past 39 years\, Walden Family Services has been a leading non-profit organization providing quality therapeutic foster care and adoption services to families throughout Southern California. In 2014\, Walden served approximately 1\,800 children and youth\, many of whom have developmental disabilities and special health care needs. Walden’s mission is to support the lives of children and families through lasting relationships. They do this by finding loving homes for children who have been abused\, neglected and abandoned. \nTeresa Stivers comes to Walden Family Services from the Child Abuse Prevention Foundation (CAPF)\, where she served as Program Director and Executive Director for 8 years. At CAPF\, she oversaw all staff and all programs.  Her tireless dedication working on behalf of children in San Diego County helped launch and establish many signature programs\, such as the Guardian Scholars Program and Mary’s House\, a transitional living program for former foster youth.

SUMMARY:Betty Peabody - Balboa Park and Rotary: San Diego's Two Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Man does not live by bread alone and Balboa Park provides the grace notes for those of us lucky enough to live in the city by the Silver Gate. From marching in the 1914 Straw Hat Parade in a show of city boosterism to the replanting of Alcazar Garden in 2015\, Balboa Park and Rotary have been integrally woven together.  Through history\, resources – from water to museum support – have been provided by familiar Rotary names:  Davidson\, Fletcher\, Frost\, Gildred\, Jessop\, Klauber\, Marston and Sefton. \nJoin us to relive historic events and look to the future of these two treasures forever welded together.

SUMMARY:UCSD Coordinated Robotics: from ideation\, to prototype\, to IP\, to market
DESCRIPTION:Professor Thomas R. Bewley\, UCSD Flow Control & Coordinated Robotics Labs\, will discuss how robotics is being radically transformed by modern cellphone electronics and software\, 3D design tools\, 3D printing\, custom printed circuit board fabrication\, and crowdfunding. We will explore how situational awareness and feedback control can help small\, simple vehicles overcome large\, complex obstacles\, and how new algorithms for coordinating squads of agile robotic vehicles can help protect human life\, grow food\, and better respond to environmental hazards like fires\, contaminant plumes\, and hurricanes. \nProfessor Bewley currently works at the intersection of semi-autonomous agile robotics and the analysis\, estimation\, and forecasting of environmental flows using advanced control theory and numerical methods. His Coordinated Robotics Lab is developing an array of clever vehicles to achieve maximum agility with minimal complexity\, and is coming to market with a number of small toy and educational robotic vehicles in collaboration with WowWee Robotics. His Flow Control Lab is developing new algorithms for weather-forecasting class problems like state estimation and adaptive observation in environmental contaminant plumes\, and in-situ monitoring of developing hurricanes using buoyancy-controlled balloons. In short\, Prof Bewley’s team is exploring how situational awareness and feedback control can help small\, simple vehicles overcome large\, complex obstacles\, and how new algorithms for coordinating squads of agile robotic vehicles can help grow food\, protect human life\, and better respond to environmental hazards.
