SUMMARY:Jennifer Eve Thorn - MOXIE Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Mind the Gap \nJennifer Eve Thorn is one of the co-founders and the current Executive Artistic Director of MOXIE Theatre\, San Diego’s only professional theatre dedicated to producing women’s work. Now approaching it’s 15th year and 61st production\, MOXIE’s mission is to create more honest and diverse images of women for our culture. Thorn explores how the gender disparity in American Theatre led to the founding and mission of MOXIE Theatre\, the history of the organization\, the ways in which MOXIE is working to make change in the industry\, how gender inequality still hides in the shadows of most arts organizations and how arts lovers can champion equality wherever they are patrons of the arts.

SUMMARY:Chuck Samuelson-Founder & President\, Kitchens for Good
DESCRIPTION:Chuck Samuelson has spent a lifetime in the food service industry as a chef\, restaurateur\, and consultant. He started his career as a dishwasher at 13 and rose to Executive Chef and Restaurant General Manager in his late twenties. He has owned award-winning restaurants and catering companies and served as the Senior Manager for Food Services at Stone Brewing Company. While working as an Executive Chef at some of San Diego’s premiere restaurants\, Samuelson was shocked at the tremendous amount of food being wasted while many in the community lacked access to nutritious food. Samuelson leveraged his network and skills to build a social enterprise that is designed to break the cycles of food waste\, poverty and hunger in the community. \nKitchens for Good is a 501(c)(3) and social enterprise with the mission to break the cycles of food waste\, hunger\, and poverty through innovative solutions in workforce training\, healthy food production\, and social enterprise. Kitchens for Good bridges the gap between wasted food and hunger by rescuing surplus and cosmetically imperfect food from wholesalers and farmers and engaging students in a culinary apprenticeship program to transform these ingredients into nutritious meals for hungry families. This approach addresses the most immediate need of hunger by feeding the food lines\, but also helps to shorten the line itself by giving unemployed people the skills to become self-sufficient. Through the power of kitchens and cooking\, our students transform their lives from one of addiction\, incarceration\, homelessness\, and unemployment\, to lives of stability\, employment\, and a brighter future. \nThe talk will be about the ROI of Social Enterprise with Kitchens For Good as the model for how essential social good work can be more sustainable.  Kitchens For Good is a part of the new wave of “revenue first” nonprofits who seek to change communities through a more sustainable business model.  For every dollar donated to KFG\, they match that dollar with earned revenue. \n

SUMMARY:Rodney Scott\, Chief Patrol Agent\, San Diego Sector Border Patrol
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday Dec. 13\, 2017\, the San Diego Sector Border Patrol welcomed its newest Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott. \nChief Scott manages more than 2\,400 law enforcement agents and support staff and has direct oversight of the area’s eight Border Patrol stations. San Diego Sector’s area of responsibility includes 60 linear miles of international boundary with Mexico and the entire California coastal region. \nPrior to his new appointment\, he served as the CPA of the El Centro Sector\, as the Deputy Chief Patrol Agent at SDC\, and as the Patrol Agent in Charge at the Brown Field Station in SDC. He also has held a variety of leadership positions\, including Assistant Chief within CBP’s Office of Anti-Terrorism in Washington\, D.C.\, and as the Director/Division Chief for the Incident Management and Operations Coordination Division at CBP Headquarters. \nChief Scott will provide a “State of the U.S./Mexico border” specific to San Diego and provide context to the ongoing humanitarian and security crisis.  Are the Central American caravans a national security threat or a humanitarian issue?  There is already a fence along the border between San Diego and Tijuana\, do we really need a border wall?   He will provide his perspective on these questions and more.
