SUMMARY:Dr. Mimi Guarneri - The Heart Speaks
DESCRIPTION:In her book “The Heart Speaks” Dr. Guarneri takes the reader on a journey of the heart – exploring the emotional heart\, able to be crushed by loss; the intelligent heart\, with a nervous system all its own; and the spiritual heart\, which yearns for a higher purpose. She skillfully weaves the science and drama of the heart’s unfolding. With groundbreaking new research and unparalleled experience\, Dr. Guarneri reveals the heart as a multi-layered\, complex organ and explores the new science that indicates the heart acts as a powerhouse of its own\, possessing intelligence\, memory\, and decision-making abilities that are separate from the mind. Her book includes a poignant collection of stories from heart patients who have benefited from integrative medicine approaches. \nThe Heart Speaks and her clinical work have been featured on NBC Today and PBS’s To the Contrary and Full Focus. Her work was also featured in a two-part PBS documentary\, The New Medicine.

Six games into his head-coaching career with Michigan\, he was undefeated and sporting a national championship ring. Fisher’s eight-plus seasons at Michigan produced a 184-82 (.692) record\, nine postseason tournament berths and three trips to the NCAA championship game\, including the magical run to the 1989 national title.\nHis accomplishments may be even greater at San Diego State. In 2001-02 he led the Aztecs to the postseason for the first time since 1985 and for just the fourth time ever. The 21 wins were second most for the school as a Division I program and the most since 1985. Those numbers came after just three seasons with the program.  He followed that up with a third consecutive season with a .500 or better record in 2002-03 and led SDSU back to the postseason for the second consecutive season for only the second time in the school’s Division I history. In addition\, SDSU claimed its first Division I postseason victory with a win in the NIT.\nIn 2006-07\, he led SDSU to the MW regular season and tournament crowns and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a Division I then-school-record 24 wins. In the 2013-2014 season\, the Aztecs matched their best-ever finish in the NCAA tournament despite being picked to finish in fourth place in the MW preseason poll and not receiving a single vote in either major preseason top-25 rankings. En route to its league-leading eighth conference championship\, San Diego State tied the school record with 20 consecutive victories before winning the second-most games in school history (31). SDSU completed the 2013-14 campaign with a 31-5 record\, won the Mountain West regular-season crown and appeared in the NCAA Sweet 16.  Fisher has also taken the Aztecs to the NIT four times\, including their run to the national semifinals in 2009. San Diego State has currently been to the postseason eight straight years.\nOnly 13 coaches have taken more teams to the Final Four\, including just five that are still active. He is one of three coaches to take three squads to the Final Four in the first five years of a head-coaching career\, and one of just six coaches to lead a team to a NIT title as well as the NCAA.\nFisher\, the 14th head coach in Aztec history\, is married to the former Angie Wilson\, another former teacher at Rich East High School. They have two sons. Mark is a Michigan graduate who is in his fourth year as an assistant coach and ninth season overall at SDSU. Jay is a 2008 graduate from the University of Southern California. \nCoach Fisher was named the 2014-15 recipient of the John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award.  It is a small\, exclusive club of the biggest names in college basketball\, and the opening ante is generally a national championship.

SUMMARY:"Scott Joplin's New Rag" - Grotarian event

SCOTT JOPLIN’S NEW RAG: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE KING OF RAGTIME WRITERS is a contemporary meditation on Joplin’s historical legacy\, established in the turbulence of the American post-reconstruction era. Spoken word\, hip hop\, and live ragtime music propel this theatrical exploration into the mind and music of this genius who lived during the Gilded Age which only glittered for some.   Who was the man behind the music and what was his enduring influence on popular music?  Did his reach extend to impacting the social and racial politics of his age?  In this world premiere piece\, playwright and solo-performer Robert Barry Fleming examines aspects of Joplin’s life – his inspirations\, struggles\, and dreams – in a multi-dimensional\, deconstructed\, one-man musical event. Mr. Fleming is an award winning director\, actor\, and choreographer.  He is the Director of Artistic Programming at the Arena Stage in Washington D.C.  In addition to numerous film and TV credits\, he has appeared on Broadway\, as well as in regional theaters throughout the United States including the Old Globe\, the Mark Taper Forum and the Guthrie. \nCost is $42 per person \nRegister here \nClick here to see who is registered \nNote: Normally at this time of day\, there is free parking available on the street.  There are also surface lots at 11th and E Street\, 11th and Broadway\, and 11th and F Street.  These pay lots normally charge between $6 and $8 and accept Visa\, MasterCard or exact cash. DESCRIPTION:Born and raised in Ohio and educated at the University of Illinois\, Kashkari worked initially as an aerospace engineer. After attending business school at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania\, he became an investment banker\, covering the information technology security sector for Goldman Sachs.  When Henry Paulson\, the former head of Goldman\, was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 2006\, he brought Kashkari on as an aide. Kashkari was eventually named Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Economics and Development. At Treasury\, he played a number of roles in the response to the financial crisis and the subprime mortgage crisis that preceded it\, most notably administering TARP. \nKashkari left government and began working for Pimco in 2009\, leading that company’s push into the equities market. In January 2013 he resigned from Pimco to explore a run for public office. One year later\, he announced his candidacy for Governor of California. On June 3\, 2014\, he came in second in California’s nonpartisan blanket primary\, placing him on the general election ballot in November against incumbent governor Jerry Brown.
