SUMMARY:Robert DeLaurentis\, the "Zen Pilot"
DESCRIPTION:Flying Thru Life: Global Service on a Wing and a Prayer (and a Malibu Mirage) \nFlying around the world in a single piston plane on a record setting flight to 23 countries and five continents in 98 days in a plane called the “Spirit of San Diego” isn’t what you think of as the typical business classroom environment or service organization. But then applying spiritual concepts to a 22-year-old business and growing it 300% in 5 years isn’t typical either.\nJoin Robert DeLaurentis as he shares inspiring—and at times terrifying—adventures and insights from his recent circumnavigation of the earth. Whether in the air at 23\,000 feet and 230 miles per hour living in a neoprene survival suit or on the ground meeting people from all walks of life\, Robert’s discovery that we are all citizens of the world with a purpose and dream bigger than we know will forever change the way you look at life.\nRobert DeLaurentis\, “Zen Pilot” is a successful author\, real estate entrepreneur\, five-year instrument and commercially rated pilot with 1200 hours of flight time\, philanthropist\, and Navy Gulf War Veteran. He holds an undergraduate degree in accounting and an advanced graduate degree in Spiritual psychology. His book\, “Flying Thru Life\,” which answers the question of how to create the abundance of time and money in your life to pursue your dreams\, was just released and is an Amazon Top Seller.

SUMMARY:2015 Mr./Ms./Mrs. San Diego Program
DESCRIPTION:Betty Peabody \nThe Past Presidents of San Diego Rotary have proudly selected Mrs. Betty Peabody as this year’s recipient of the\n2015 Mrs. San Diego Award. \nPlease join us on September 24th at the Liberty Station Conference Center to honor Betty for her leadership and contributions to the City of San Diego. \nBetty Peabody’s interests\, volunteerism\, and achievements in the San Diego community have been many and varied\, but all were due to her tireless passion for the betterment of our city. \nVolunteering for Balboa Park almost daily since 1969\, Betty co-founded the Friends of Balboa Park with the vision of keeping the park alive well into the next century.  They have implemented over 200 projects in 15 years\, funded by private donations of more than $4 million.  These range from the five information kiosks placed around the park\, to mapping the water pipe infrastructure with SDSU students and to returning the 5th grade San Diego Unified School program to the Park. Their latest project\, The Friends’ Water-Wise program\, was designed to optimize water use in the park to make the park more environmentally sustainable while keeping it healthy and attractive for visitors. \nBetty has served on the boards of the San Diego Museum of Man\, the Central Balboa Park Association\, and as president of the House of Hospitality and the Balboa Park Millennium Society. She conceived Christmas on the Prado which is now December Nights. \nA founding member of the San Diego County Crime Stoppers\, Inc.\, Betty has encouraged good people to report bad things anonymously for the past 31 years. He has been principal investigator or helped lead over a dozen large-scale\, international randomized trials and has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts as well as numerous book chapters\, and abstracts.

SUMMARY:Dr. Peter Salk\, President - Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Jonas Salk’s Centenary Year – a Vision for the Future \nJonas Salk is an icon in the history of medicine.  The polio vaccine he and his research team developed in the early 1950s lifted a pervasive fear.  He is less well known for his earlier work on the first influenza vaccine\, his founding of the Salk Institute\, and his relentless pursuit of ways to alleviate human suffering in diverse realms.  This talk\, given by Dr. Peter Salk\, will touch on these various aspects of his life. \nDr. Peter Salk graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard University in 1965 and Alpha Omega Alpha from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1969. Following two years of house staff training in internal medicine at the University Hospitals of Cleveland\, he worked in his father’s laboratory at the Salk Institute from 1972-1984 conducting research on the biology and immunotherapy of cancer and autoimmune disease and strategies for vaccine production. He worked again with his father from 1991-1995 on a project to develop an inactivated vaccine for HIV infection\, and subsequently worked on the introduction of AIDS treatment programs in Africa and Asia. He is currently President of the Jonas Salk Legacy Foundation\, where he is devoting attention to educating the public regarding his father’s life and work and to extending and applying his father’s vision to help address humanity’s present challenges and opportunities\, particularly in the realms of vaccines\, global health\, and creating a sustainable human future.
