SUMMARY:Giving Thanks and Giving Back
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a very inspiring program focused on the impact that our club has in this community and around the world. If you thought the good work of Rotary was on hold due to Covid – think again. Hear from our very own Mark Stuart on the impact of philanthropy in San Diego and from some of our own club leaders on their big plans to do good in 2021. This program replaces our annual holiday auction\, but there will be an opportunity to “raise your paddle” in support of our 2021 committee initiatives at this meeting.  We thank you in advance for your support\, and more importantly\, for your devotion and passion to making a difference in the world through Rotary. \n

SUMMARY:Melissa Peterman\, Comic-Con Museum
DESCRIPTION:You cannot live in San Diego without knowing that the Comic-Con Convention has placed our destination city on a global stage. For half a century this remarkable organization has honored the beauty\, creativity\, and diversity of pop culture. The summer convention sells out in hours and millions of fans reluctantly miss out on the 4 1/2 days of magic at the San Diego Convention Center. In 2017\, the City of San Diego leased Comic-Con the former Hall of Champions building to create the Comic-Con Museum. With this museum on schedule for a summer 2021 opening\, fans from around the world can enjoy the wonders of Comic-Con year-round. \nWhat you will see at our Dec.10 meeting:\n• Video of fans and supporters\n• A 3-D flythrough video of the museum rendering\n• Sneak peek at the Museum Character Hall of Fame 2020\n• A look at how the Comic-Con Museum is virtually open and creating a best-practice model for virtual museums all over the world \n  \nGuest Speaker: Melissa Peterman \nMs. Peterman\, a native San Diegan\, holds a Bachelor’s in political science from San Diego State University and a Master’s in political theory from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining the Comic-Con staff\, Ms. Peterman worked in the fields of affordable housing and homelessness services for nearly 10 years. As Vice President of Homeless Housing Innovations with the San Diego Housing Commission\, she led teams responsible for managing multimillion-dollar projects including the citywide strategic initiatives\, Housing Our Heroes and HOUSING FIRST – SAN DIEGO\, to permanently house 4\,000 individuals experiencing homelessness. \nAs Vice President of the Comic-Con Museum\, Ms. Peterman is responsible for leading operations and fundraising efforts needed to bring the project to life in Balboa Park by 2021. In close partnership with the Comic-Con Board and other senior leaders\, Ms. Peterman works to create and implement strategies for stabilization\, strategic growth\, and impact.

SUMMARY:Michael W. McConnell-Solving Homelessness in San Diego
DESCRIPTION:Solving Homelessness in San Diego\nWhat will it take? \nSan Diego has added tens of millions of new dollars annually on trying to reduce homelessness with little success to show for it. Looking at the data and how our homeless service system operates will shed light on some of the reasons why money alone will not solve this issue. Opportunities to make progress are there if we are willing to act with a sense of urgency and take advantage of them. \nGuest speaker Michael McConnell is a recognized leader in the fight to solve homelessness. He has served on multiple homelessness advisory committees\, including having served as vice chair on the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.\nA thought leader on the topic\, he’s presented at conferences across the country\, including the National Alliance to End Homelessness Conference. He has organized regional summits and is a regular presence at community meetings. \nPreviously\, McConnell was a member of San Diego Grantmakers’ Homelessness Working Group and helped established Funders Together to End Homelessness San Diego – a local representative of a national collaborative of philanthropists and grantmakers that combine resources to actively end homelessness. \nSince 2009\, McConnell has directed his philanthropy and volunteer time to solving homelessness.

SUMMARY:Dr. Tony Hunter\, American Cancer Society Professor\, Molecular and Cell Biology Laboratory\, Renato Dulbecco Chair
DESCRIPTION:Tony Hunter\, PhD\, is a Salk scientist and American Cancer Society Professor. \nDr. Hunter made the seminal discovery\, more than four decades ago\, that the addition and subtraction of phosphate molecules to proteins on tyrosine\, one of the 20 amino acids\, allows cells to control when key proteins are on standby and when they are active. He went on to show that\, in cancers\, growth was switched to an always-on mode by the malfunctions of these phosphates. Since then\, his lab has led the field in understanding how chemical additions to proteins control the cell cycle and growth. Dr. Hunter uses cutting-edge molecular\, genetic and cell biology techniques to probe how these programs interact with each other\, what effect they have on cells and how cancers disrupt them to encourage uninhibited growth. Already\, cancer drugs—such as the leukemia therapy Gleevec™—have been designed based on Hunter’s discoveries. Gleevec turns off an enzyme that normally adds phosphates to tyrosines in proteins\, thus preventing cancers from growing. As Hunter continues to discover other ways in which cells use chemical additions to proteins to control their growth\, he aims to find potential therapeutic targets for cancers. \nDr. Hunter will talk about his major discovery that led to the drug\, Gleevec and the research he is currently conducting through his NCI Outstanding Investigator Award\, which supports accomplished leaders in cancer research.
