SUMMARY:Dr. Eli Berman- Empirical Studies of Conflict: Implications for ISIS and Syria
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Eli Berman will summarize a decade of research on economics in conflict zones\, and draw lessons for confronting ISIS and stabilizing Iraq and Syria. Using evidence from Iraq\, Afghanistan\, and other conflicts\, Berman will explain why local allies must be induced by foreign powers to provide governance and enable economic development to stabilize Syria and reverse refugee flows. Framing development and security force assistance in that context implies practical policy reforms. \nDr. Berman is Chair and Professor of economics at UC San Diego. He is also Research Director for International Security Studies at UCSD’s Institute of Global Conflict and Cooperation (IGCC). \nIGCC addresses global challenges to peace and prosperity through academically rigorous\, policy-relevant research\, training\, and outreach on international security\, economic development\, and the environment. It brings scholars together across social science and lab science disciplines to work on topics such as regional security\, nuclear proliferation\, innovation and national security\, development and political violence\, emerging threats\, and climate change. \nHis book Radical\, Religious and Violent: The New Economics of Terrorism was published in 2009. Dr. Berman received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University.

SUMMARY:Dr. Edith Eva Eger
DESCRIPTION:A native of Hungary\, Edith Eva Eger was just a young teenager in 1944 when she experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe\, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz\, the heinous death camp. Her parents lost their lives there. Toward the end of the war Edith and other prisoners had been moved to Austria. On May 4\, 1945 a young American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly amongst a number of dead bodies. He quickly summoned medical help and brought her back from the brink of death. \nAfter the war Edith moved to Czechoslovakia where she met the man she would marry. In 1949 they moved to the United States. In 1969 she received her degree in Psychology from the University of Texas\, El Paso. She then pursued her doctoral internship at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss\, Texas. \nDr. Eger is a prolific author and a member of several professional associations. She has a clinical practice in La Jolla\, California and holds a faculty appointment at the University of California\, San Diego. She has appeared on numerous television programs including Oprah Winfrey and was the primary subject of a holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch National Television. She is frequently invited to make speaking engagements throughout the United States\, Mexico\, and abroad. \nDr. Eger will share her story of victimization to empowerment. She will also share with us lessons that prove everybody is a survivor of something and that every experience has a gift for us that is for the greater good.
