DESCRIPTION:Current Trends in Drug Trafficking and Abuse \nAs a 28-year veteran of the DEA and having spent most of his career in San Diego\, Agent Rockwell “Rocky” Herron  will discuss the current situation with the importation and consumption of hard drugs (opioids\, heroin\, methamphetamine\, counterfeit pills) and the impact that this consumption has on our individuals\, families\, communities\, country\, and internationally.   The drug crisis is worse than most of us realize and this presentation intends to create awareness about the true scope of the problem.

SUMMARY:Pam Becker\, Executive Director - Canine Companions for Independence
DESCRIPTION:One Team\, Two Heroes \nThere are technologies available to help people with disabilities\, but none compare to a Canine Companions assistance dog\, transforming the art of healing through a cold nose and a warm heart. Learn how Canine Companions for Independence help people with physical disabilities\, as well as veterans with PTSD\, by providing service dogs\, at no cost to the recipient. We will also meet a veteran whose life has been made better by his Canine Companions service dog\, Hurley. \nPam Becker is Executive Director of the Southwest Region for Canine Companions for Independence\, a national non-profit organization headquartered in Santa Rosa\, California\, that breeds\, raises\, and trains expertly-trained assistance dogs at no cost to children\, adults\, and veterans with disabilities\, or professionals who work with clients who have special needs. The Southwest Region encompasses nine states and includes a training facility in Oceanside\, where 32 staff members provide dog training and care for 60-80 dogs; deliver program support for applicants and graduates who receive a Canine Companions dog; provide fundraising\, marketing and administrative support; and manage more than 850 volunteers who support the Canine Companions mission. \n

SUMMARY:SHARP Neonatal Research Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Miracle of Modern Neonatal Care \nSan Diego is one of the leaders in advancements made to ensure premature babies grow into healthy children. The work is no less than miraculous and being done right in our backyard. Hear from the leader in this research and the changes to birth centers and the neonatal intensive care units protocols that is saving lives. \nOur guest speaker will be Dr. Anup Katheria\, Director of the Neonatal Research Institute at Sharp. He will be presenting an overview of a recently developed program at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns\, the Neonatal Research Institute. This program\, the first of its kind\, had been developed to bring large scale research\, typically done at University Hospitals to the largest delivery hospital in the state. To date the institute has received 4 National Institute of Health grants\, and over $10 million in research funding. Over 1500 newborns have been enrolled in 30 trials all impacting the practice and care of the newborn.

SUMMARY:Dan Shea and Peter Seidler - San Diego's Homeless Crisis
DESCRIPTION:Peter Seidler and Dan Shea studied homeless issues\, convened business and political leaders and raised funding\, bringing their ideas for a short-term solution to get homeless people off the streets to execution. Seidler is General Partner of the San Diego Padres and a founder and Managing Partner of Seidler Equity Partners\, a family-owned private equity fund.  Shea is a partner in Paradigm Investment Group\, which runs 140 restaurants across the U.S. He is also co-owner of Donovan’s Steak and Chop House restaurants. \nThey will address San Diego’s homelessness situation including the following topics: \n(a) What San Diego’s annual “point in time” homeless count tells us.\n(b) The importance of a fact-based\, analytical and collaborative culture among San Diego leaders (business\, political\, philanthropic\, service providers\, educational\, etc.)\n(c) The facts lead San Diego to Bridge Shelter Tents.  Focused collaboration made them a success.\n(d) Customizing the “Housing First” model for San Diego.\n(e) Puzzle pieces including mental health\, low cost supportive housing\, veteran’s needs\, the elderly\, etc.\n(f) Key next steps for all of us to support.
